Firefox AdBlock? - to hell with that ****

I've heard so much about how awesome this extension is.

It's done nothing but piss me off. Every single time I select an image or flash animation to block, it does nothing. I reload the page, and the image is back. I block it again and reload the page - the image comes back! Just WTF does this plugin actually do? It certainly doesn't block any ads for me...

For some websites, it's made things worse for - on some forums, not only does it refuse to block cetain banners ads, it goes to the trouble of doubling them up! I've gone to the trouble of blocking some banners several times and instead of not seeing them - they appear twice in a row on some websites! Since I've uninstalled the AdBlock plugin - those double banners have gone away.

**** this ****! I love Firefox - but this extension sucks ass for me and it's regularly listed as one of the most downloaded and highly rated Firefox plugins.

It works great here. In some websites like IGN.com or F1Racing.net it´s not that useful, because most of the time when you refresh the page the ads you´ve blocked appear again. I guess they have tons of different urls for the ads, that´s why they keep coming back.

But in 95% of the websites it works great, including GTP.

I didn't like AdBlock either.

It didn't do much blocking and the things it did block were the things I actually wanted to see.

Mine works fantastically. You might want to test the * abilities of Ad-block. It works wonders with site blocking vrs. image blocking.

It's because you are individually picking off sites. Go here and read the instructions file. Basically, this guy wrote a VERY in depth Adblock configuration which blocks off around 95% of all ad banners 👍

You might want to try the throwing in a wildcard like the asterisk (*). What I do is take the base url of the website and add an asterisk after it. It works well for me.

Exactly what I do. I've even managed to block the Google ads down at the bottom of the page.

If you know what you're doing when you go to block the images, you can block everything fairly easily. The reason that clicking "Adblock Image" and hitting okay doesn't work is because the paths to each specific image are generated completely at random, hence all of the jumbled letters and numbers at the end of the path. So if you have an image from say .. somewhere on tribalfusion.com that you want to block instead of just hitting okay, use the wildcard ( * ) to block everything. So it would look something like http://www.tribalfusion.com/*, which effectively blocks nearly all content from the tribalfusion domain.

Don't be so quick to bash something which you don't really (or atleast thats how it seems) know how to use, KM.

My method is easier because everything is done for you :D
Probably. But what about the self-gratification of knowing you did it on your own?

yeeaaa, but I'm lazy. I want my browsing experience to be quick, painless, and without any eyesores (ie, ads). Using these scripts is fast, painless, and rediculously easy. Plus it gets rid of all the eyesores :D

Agreed. Although I'd still rather do it myself .. that way you know what is being blocked.

I've used those files for my mom's pc, but I prefer chosing what sites to toss on mine.

Thanks emad, I tried this and it´s really efficient. 👍

JUst realised a great feature that i hadn't noticed before:
Ever written an amazingly long post on gtplanet, or any other forum for that matter, and clicked send, only to find that the next pge that appears is "this page cannot be displayed". Bye bye post if you're using ms internet explorer! However, if you're using firefox, should a problem occur with your connection, the page you were on, including your written post, remains the same, and a little announcement appears on the screen, telling you that the conncetion has timed out. So, your post doesn't dissappear! Hooray!!

I'm sure that one of the seven were more fitting for that though. Considering it had nothing to do with Adblock.

Maybe the "Just downloaded Firefox ... whoa!" thread.
