OK, I did a search and found nothing on this topic, so apologies if I missed it before.

As a releatively new player (only a few weeks on and off) I was wondering which car is the best for a FIRST Rally car.

Right now I only own one car (Mustang - almost fully upgraded) and I have equipped it with dirt tires and it does ok on the first rally race. It wind, but does alot of wall bouncing.

Other than the expensive purpose rally cars, what are good starting rally options?

I think the Cobra R can do fine in the Rally races...maybe you can get a LANCER or an Impreza? Those 2 cars are great for rally...

My first rally car was the Mines Lancer Evolution ( dirt tires ) I maxed out the car , and it was capable of kicking some of the other rally cars butt . But my favourite rally car is the Ford Escort .

I did exactly the same, I clocked a lot of (rally) miles on my Mines lancer evo!

I'd say take any car with 4 wheel drive and atleast 450 hp (wouldn't go over 600 though) and you can get a pretty sweet rally car!

greetz

Lancer VI (NOT t.m.e) @ 505 hp, cant tell you how fun it is to rally in this beast... i set it up so that it gets MAJOR oversteer when i lift the throttle off
and in rally, if you ever find yourself spinning, countersteer and GAS IT
if you don't get it, the car WILL spin out, but if you gas it (hold it down) the car will be stable and get back onto the track in 1 or 2 seconds

My Impreza LM has excellent handling on both dirt and road...

The Impreza stb or what ever it is (at the very end of the subaru list just before the rally cars) was the car i used to get started. She worked very well. As i remember i had tires (of course), exaust, chip, balance, port/polish, turbo and intercooler suspension, brake controller, and then weight reduction to the max and adjust center diff. Probably had the driveshaft, clutch and flywheel (great way to get some go out of the car and make gear changes quicker). I don't believe it was maked out, maybe it was, but it was like mid 400's i think. Ran through the 1st 2-3 groupings with it (1group=3 races just incase that was confusing). Then i started using the focus rally maked out.

To make the rally a little more exciting I decided to run as little HP as possible. Although I chose WRC style cars the most powerfull one (celica GT4) was 350bhp.

Subaru Impreza Sti 22b
Racing Suspension
Brake Controller
Brake Kit
Racing Clutch
Racing Flywheel
Carbon Driveshaft
Full Racing Transmission
Full LSD
Dirt Tyres
Weight reduction stage 3.

The car had around 280bhp, but the weight reduction makes it 200kgs or so lighter than most rally cars. The only thing is that sometimes the AI gets their 'boost' if you kick their ass to hard.

Another favorite is my Rally Elise 190, with only 240 bhp I managed a sloppy lap of taihiti maze with a 1.56.xxx time.

The EVO's are an excellent choice for a rally car, or a second car in general. I used a Mine's skyline to eliminate the Rally section.

Good luck

I used a lancer evo VI with minor mods succesfully :)

the first rally car i used was the impreza 22b sti!! i handle great.. and drift good too....or other siggestion would be the skyline lol...fast and u can win the AI by boucing everywhere and still win..!!:D

Yes, that is true, the Subaru impreza prototype is good!

i started off with a new lookin STI IMPREZa with golden rims .and a 500+hp turbuchrged monster ( the colour was white)

I use the FTO LM. Just use the stock HP and you should be fine. Just watch the wheel spin if you gas it too fast.

My first was one of the countless Lancers you win early on in the game (might have even been an Evo VII).

I've got a couple of favourites:
- the AWD RUF, the RGT I think. In full war spec that thing's pretty impressive
- the Citroen Xsara. Can you believe it's front drive!?!?
- Subaru Impreza Prototype

I think the Cobra should do well enough, but i had enough money so i just went and bought an Escudo...blitzed them all!

Subaru Imprezza LM Road car all tuned dirt tyres, won in the amature dream car championship....bloody simple.

Subaru Impreza LM Race Car mate ;) Haven't you seen the number stickers and sponsors? But yeh, it does sound quite tempting...

that happens to me lots...always get it wrong....

I used the skyline r32 @ around 1000 hp that was great I went right through the races.

but first actual rally car was the lancer evo rally car :)

I used either the Imprezza STi 22b, the Beetle RSi, or the Skyline R34 (all fully modded). The Skyline is stooopid fast, but great once you learn to control it. You also have to tune it properly so that it stays on the ground every now and then...
