For those of you who don't know what FIRST is, it is an organization founded by Dean Kamen to get students, teachers, professionals, and members of the community to collaborate together to solve an engineering design problem presented in a game format. FIRST stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology and encourages students to celebrate engineering and science in an environment. Each year, a new game with new design challenges is revealed at beginning of January. The kickoff each year starts a six week building season in which each team (usually based on individual schools) must design and build their own robot based on certain guidelines (size, weight, etc) and a basic kit of parts (motors, robot controllers, radios, batteries, etc). Each team must purchase raw materials, design, fabricate their robot base and any mechanisms, along with programming the robot using C, to accomplish certain objects of the game. Teams will then compete against other teams and their robots in regional competitions, and if certain criterias are met, will compete also in the Championship competition. During the season, the goal is to have the student be introduced to engineering and the importance of it, while still having fun.
Earlier today, 2006's game was revealed. Are there any members here that participate in FIRST robotics, whether as a student/college member, mentor, etc? If you do, what team are you on and what do you think about this year's game?
