The Land Rover Freelander 2 has scored the full five stars for overall adult occupant protection in the Euro NCAP crash tests, the first compact SUV to do so, and bettering the poor three-star result of the first-generation model. It also achieved four out of four for child protection, but just one for pedestrian protection - best not get run down by one, then.

Euro NCAP also tested the latest Suzuki Grand Vitara, which scored four stars overall, and three for child protection - but an excellent three for pedestrian protection.

Euro NCAP spokesman Adrian Hobbs said: 'I am delighted that Land Rover has made such an improvement... I am disappointed though that the company has not invested the same effort in improving the level of protection it offers to pedestrians.'

It's about time they justified the "bigger is safer" argument. It's going to be impossible to make it exceptionally pedestrian safe.

Someone had parked a Porsche Cayenne outside our house earlier, I was walking past it and the bonnet was at level with my hips. I childs head would be there.

4X4s are only safer for one person, the <insertname> who's in it.

I despise Chelsea tractors.
