This should be interesting. What songs do you think have the greatest guitar solos ever recorded?

For me Heartbreaker by Jimmy Page has the best guitar solo followed by:

Crazy Train by Randy Rhoads
All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix
Eruption by Eddie Van Halen
Voodoo Chile by Jimi Hendrix

Those are in no order save for Heartbreaker being number one.

I'm guessing Stairway to Heaven is going to top most lists.

Master of Puppets has one of the greatest gutiar solos

Not really a solo, but excellent guitar playing. Queens of the Stone Age - "Go With the Flow". Come on, how many people do you know that can hold a note so long?

Ditto for Eddie Van Halen - Eruption

I also like:
Lynryd Skynryd - Freebird
Steppenwolf - Magic Carpet ride
(i dont think these really count as solo's, its just a instrumental part of the song)

Oh, and Jimi Hendrix playing the national anthem.

I'm in no mood to start thinking here but I'd have to say:

Steppenwolf - Magic Carpet Ride
Most Led Zep's - STH, Heartbreaker, I can't remember the others

the Jimi National Anthem (Woodstock, day 3) is the best guitar solo ever. otherwise, i don't know.

yep ive got it on an album called Experience Hendrix: The best of Jimi Hendrix

1. Slash - Sweet child o' mine (hey im biased)
2. Eddie van Halen- Eruption
3. Karl Logan-My spirit lives on
4. Jimi Hendrix- Star spangled banner
5. Ernie C- C note

how many could we list here?

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the guitar solo in the song "Confortably Numb" by Pink Floyd. I hope you guys just forgot because this is one of the greatest.

sorry to sound like a hethan but ive never listened to it:(

I won't rank them, but here goes.

Heartbreaker by Jimmy Page.
Scuttle Buttin' by Stevie Ray Vaughn
Let The Good Times Roll by Jimi Hendrix
something by Frank Zappa; haven't decided yet
La Grange or Tush by Billy Gibbons

Note that these mostly are in the blues-rock category; I'm not metal enough to pick out some of the speed demons from that side of thisngs.

1) ONE - Metallica
2) Stairway - LZ
3) Stinkfist - TOOL
4) Sting of the Bumble bee - Man O' War
5) Battery (the entire MOP album while we're at it) - Metallica

Ive got it somewhere on video that the fella that was doing the drumming for jimi that day was going that fast just to keep warm! apparently it was bloody cold that day:D

pointless trivia fact for the day:cool:

Little Wing--SRV
The Ballad of Bily and Conley--Jimmy Olander of Diamond REO.
Any song by Monte Montgomery (If you haven't heard of him yet, don't worry, you will)
Fool in the Rain--Jimmy Page
Landslide--Lindsay Buckinham

I like Finger Pickers and Blues Players.
Honorable Mention to Doyle Dykes. One of the Best Acoustic players extant.

No particular order because I cannot and do not want to.

Jimi - National Anthem
EVH - Eruption
Slash - You Could be Mine
Jimmy Page - Kashmir
Metallica - One

Jesus, how old are you people?
Just old enough to know GOOD guitar.
The newer guitarists tend to play re-vamped Hendrix licks, they play 'em twice as fast, but only half as good.
