Well, I just found the flash drive I had been looking for over the last few days. At the bottom of my washing machine. I plugged it in to my comp after blowing the water off the contact to find that it not only still works fine, but has all my data on it even.

This got me thinking about what crazy stories do you have about things your flash drive has suffered though... wondering just how tough they actually are.

Those suckers are quite durable. They're totally non volatile and to top that, they don't have any sort of electric charge running through them when they're not plugged in. That said, you should be happy that there wasn't any water inside of it when you *did* plug it in - then you might have been in a bit of trouble

I dropped mine in the snow and the cap fell off. Thats the worst I've done to mine.

I should've gotten the Cruzer Titanium. That thing can get run over and survive. Well, at least the data will survive! :p

/me brushes off VERY old thread.

Just thought perhaps some more interesting stories exist now, since almost 3 years later I am sure more people have flash drives (you should, they cost like 10 dollars now).

I've put all of mine through washing machines several times over now, all are still good. Heck a couple through the dryer as well. An iPod Nano survived a trip through the washer as well.

So, any stories to tell now?

Well, my usb mp3 player was dropped from the 7 train level of Woodside station onto, presumably, the street. But I couldn't find it. Either disintegrated or stolen....

I've had my usb go through the washer and dryer, came out fine, but while I was waiting for it to dry I was a wreck. I keep all my homework papers (essays and the like) on it so losing them would have sucked something terrible.

I've had the opposite of success. Had one on my key chain my freshmen year at VT. It only made it through the first semester. Football games were the death of it. Shaking the keys on third down did it in.

Atleast you necro'd your own thread blu-man. I didn't realize it was you at first and my flame switch was turned on temporarily lol.

I got a new PNY 2GB drive in cigarette lighter orange for $17. It's already been through the washer, sat on, and thrown into my cup holder.

My iPod Nano went through a heavy-cycle wash and after a day drying off on top of the heater it worked fine and still works fine to this day (6 months later).

I dont know about physical durability but ive had a 1gb sandisk usb flash drive die on me. Nothing happened to it. Computers just wouldnt recognize it when i plug it in. And ive tried it on many computers.

Likely it was corrupted from being removed incorrectly. Have you tried formating it?

And Sakiale, the durability of Nano's is primarily a function of their flash memory. Many other flash based MP3 players are just as durable.

Yeah .. my 20gb iPod bit the dust after falling to the hardwood floor from my keyboard tray. :(

That's because those 20gb ipod are big and heavy. Newton's first law of motion- An object in motion wants to stay in motion. Second law- The more mass an object has the more resistance to change it has.

Since most flash drives are 1-2gb they're super light and don't break.

I have dropped my 20Gig generation ipod loads of times on marble/wood floors, it has scratches and even a badly cracked screen, but it stil works perfectly, I have had it for years.

On the note of indestructable flash drives, I had the misfortune of a yogart exploding in my school bag, I didn't have the cap on the flash drive as a result yogart got inside. I was going to just chuck it away, but I just though I would plug it in just to see if happend to work. Amazingly it did, no fuss, still with all my files on i was amazed. I was even more amazed when it survived being chewed by the dog...

small but tough.

My old PNY 256MB (back when these babies were $90...) has been through the wash once. It didn't get to run through the dryer as well, but it has worked fine since.

Both my flash drive and mp3 player (normal flash drive) have been through the wash, both worked fine after with all data still on. (Although they're both long gone now)

Also i took my mp3 player apart to the circuit board with the screen hanging and stuck it in the computer, it worked fine still.

These things don't break easily, just don't snap the circuit board or the connector (which is fragile, also, data wipe is not broken)

My iFP180 iRiver mp3 player went through the washing machine and dryer, and it still works fine. Even the display screen!

One of my friends dogs chewed on my PS2 memory card...WITH MY PRECIOUS GT4 DATA! He said he'd buy me a new memory card but...alas, the memory card works still perfectly now, all data, with chewmarks, 2 years later :)
