I'm doing the night races on National A, Willow Springs being the last one.

The lighting on this track... oh my word, it's beyond everything I could ever think of. The actual track is as dark as the night sky, you can barely see the sides of the track. I don't know if it's an issue with the car (Ford Focus ST 15th Anniversary Model) or the track itself. Just look at this:

Sorry for the meh quality; I couldn't use a flash for obvious reasons and the focus is a bit off, but you'll get the idea... Amazing...

Not had much trouble with the lighting at night on every other track, but this one. I don't understand it either, and it makes these races incredibly difficult.

Oh and it's not just that car, either. I don't think I used that car on that race, so it's definitely not an issue with the Focus.

I had to turn on the driving line to know where I was going.

This isn't just the case for this partiular car. No car that I've driven on Willow at night thus far, has been capable of lighting up the road adequately. So far, I too have had to turn on the driving line in order to win any events on this track at night.

I gave up on doing it without the racing line, after I ended up in the pits doing a race. Was rather awkward.

Both Willow and Ascari were nearly impossible for me to drive, so I turned on the driving line (and followed the AI for most of the race).

Yup can't see anything - the lights are not illuminating the road nearly enough. It's on all tracks - just that certain tracks like Willow don't have their own lights making this a problem.

I just got myself in 2nd place and followed the lead car round until the final corner.

Generally the night lighting is much better in GT6 than GT5, but Willow Springs is a bit of a PITA.

The best car so far, lighting wise, that I've driven yet, is the Lancia Delta HF.
I'm also at +5 on the lighting option in the quick "pause" menu.

Just did this exact scenario (same car and track) and I can see the track just fine without the driving line. I set the exposure value to +1.0 (max) before doing the race. I suppose that setting exposure back to normal would make it look like those screencaps.
