Ford boasts reborn Capri concept

Ford’s new design philosophy has produced some stunning cars in recent times such as the new-generation [Falcon]

Now Ford has reinvented the Capri namesake as a stylish and affordable 2+2 Coupe - although shooting-brake would be a more accurate description.

Not seen since the late Eighties, the Capri will face some strong competition, with the market having become flooded with affordable Coupes in recent times.

This includes the resurrected Volkswagen Scirocco, the forthcoming Hyundai Coupe, the recently green-lit Peugeot 308 RC Z and the Toyota-Subaru collaborative Celica replacement.

But the new Capri won’t be competing with looks alone, likely to feature the 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged unit from the Mondeo.

An all-wheel-drive RS version is also a possibility, powered by a 3.2-litre six-cylinder engine.

So far there are no official plans for the Capri from Ford before the next decade, however a concept version is expected to be revealed in 2009.

Hell yeah, now we are talking. And perhaps this could encourage Holden to make a Torana off the Alpha platform :dopey:

huh. didn't know they'd canned the Capri model down there. hope you get a cool ver...and mabey they can drop the hint to make something like that into an Oz Ranchero.

oh, they DID send one of your Capri convertibles up here for a while. el floppo.

Edit: WOOHOO! GOLD level!

hm...it sounds like it'll encroach a bit on Mustang turf...on the other hand, If it's an FF, It should be okay to get over here...

The Capri was originally marketed as a 'Mustang for Europe' anyway. More finesse, less cubic inches.

Who cares about Mustang, with the new 5.0L coming this will be well behind in terms of straight line speed. Think Supra vs Celica. The AWD RS model has me very excited. That vs a RWD Torana and I'm set.:D

So are they actually going to build it? I'm guessing it will be based of the Focus? Or maybe Fiesta? It'll be interesting to see if they decide to compete with the Scirocco it terms of power from the 2.5T or if they will be after the R32 with that 2.3L V6.

I don't know. This has sort of come out of the blue really hasn't it? Whatever it's based off, it must be AWD compatitable. Maybe they'll design a new platform or something. All I know is there was no mention of rumours, they just came out and said, hey look, Ford is reviving Capri. That pic is not likely an official Ford pic though.

The Autoblog title has a "rendered speculation" tag on it so I'm pretty sure this isn't done by Ford. It does give a bit of "confirmation" that this will be based on the Focus though.

And it sounds like they are still unsure if they are going to even do a concept, so this is one of those cars where I have to say I'll believe it when I see it.

My assumption is that Ford will wait and see what the Alpha cars do for GM before they ever consider doing a small RWD car. A car based on the MKIII Focus seems most likely, particularly if they gave it a Haldex AWD system and a 3.5L EcoBoost V6 (in top form). But hell, even a 2.0L I4 EcoBooster would be great too.

I'm not overly excited, I'm still too sad that we don't have the Scirocco.

I'm not. I think that one should've been a liftback to start with.

This one at least looks "Faster" in the back than the Scirocco.

A Capri?! :D hehe In the great words of Peter Griffin.. "Heheheheh.... Sweet." :sly::dopey::lol:

There's just one problem with the Capri name... I think of this:

800px-Mercury-Capri.jpg

BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD. VERY BAD!

And when I hear Capri, I think of this

Let the good times roll at Bathurst.

When I hear Capri....well...

(I have a 1/64 model of this very car, which is why I associate the Capri name so strongly with it.)

yss posted the one we ended up with in the states! and you wonder why a "Pontiaced" Monaro didn't cut the mustard?

Actually, we had the Euro Capri in the '70s, but it didnt' sell well in Mercury showrooms. I think that one's a rebadged (FWD) Elan.

Nope. It's an Australian car with Mazda parts.

Crazy old Mazda. Did you know that a Ford Laser and Mazda 323 of the same year all have the same keys? You can drive your Ford with Mazda keys. Obviously they are the same car.

funny, the only Capri I remember is a badge swapped fox platform mustang...

okay, looked it up. yes, they did haul the Euro Capris up here during the 70's, then the fox bod version took over the name. 'course, I was just starting school when the Euro Capris was finishing up its third gen, here :P

@buickgnx88 .... Yes the fox Capri! :D :sly:

oooooooo

it got the "bandit" treatment. wish those wheels were available in GT4

The first time I have seen this thread... but that is a curious redesign. The boxy charm of the original Capri is gone. I am not an Australian, so I would not know the Capri for anything else, therefore I will say that I find it borderline hideous, even ungainly.

"Not for a long time, though". I am thankful, in terms of aesthetics.

Ford have indeed got a long time to make it look right, that picture was just a rendered speculation.

plus, the "boxy" look is out everywhere BUT the US. up here, if it's not a tank-shape, it's considered an ugly safety risk that will be destroyed in a bumper tap, which will automatically throw the hood through the windsheld/screen and cut the driver's head off :P

apparently, our insurance companies think this, too :P
