Even though I don't like when people are comparing designs of cars in that way, I just couldn't help it this time. I was looking at some pictures of this new ford and I realised that if you take away the Ford badge, it looks like some weird Chinese market (:)) VW Passat.

I hope that's a Photoshopped lie, because that could very well be the ugliest thing I have ever seen....

It isn't photoshopped. Check out the link under "source".

And it's not just the rear end. In fact, the only thing that is different is the front.

The Five Hundred and it's upper scale sibling the Fusion (as well as the Mucury clone Montego) are going to get their asses handed to them on a silver platter by the Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum, and Dodge Charger.

Ford wants you to think:

Five Hundred vs. Chevrolet Impala, Toyota Avalon, Nissan Maxima, Pontiac Grand Prix
Crown Victoria vs. Chrysler 300C, Buick LeSabre

They convinced me.

Not surprising really.

J. Mays designed both the Passat and the Five Hundred.

While it does look like a Passat (or an Audi), it still has quite a few Ford styling cues.

Strange that you grouped the 500 with the avalon and maxima. I would see those as at the top of their company's line in price. Right before crossing into lexus and infiniti territory respectively. I personally would probably pick the 500 over the avalon and impala. Maxima (3.5) at the top, followed by Grand Prix, then the 500.

I grouped them there because Ford does. Buyer base is supposed to be similar: Five Hundred vs. the predominantly over-sixty crowd of Avalon buyers and Five Hundred vs. Maxima buyers who prefer price to sport.

Horizontally stretch the tail lights, you kind of have a Toyota Chaser style of taillights. That car would so pwn in America, unless it's a Lexus I didn't know exist.

Allow me to recite from this booklet I have from Ford from the 2004 Houston Auto Show:

"2005 FORD FIVE HUNDRED

"The qualities that America loves in sport utility vehicles are now available in this all-new sedan - high seating, all-wheel drive, enormous cargo area, surprising versatilitiy, and state-of-the-art safety." It's the quintessential American sedan. You have to see it to believe it."

The only respect I have for Ford nowadays is for bringing back the GT40 as the GT, the Shelby Cobra as a concept, and the classic Mustang in a more modern mold. Will the Five-hundred attract more than 500 hundred people? With those looks, it's more than likely a Crown Victoria replacement. And it probably is. By the way, this booklet also says that the Five-Hundred is "The Reinvention of the American Sedan." But a Passat wannabe? I don't really think so, even though I'm not a fan of this car.

Looks alright to me, back lights look very similar to the Mondeo (Here in UK atleast) & atleast it doesn't look as bad as the second(?) generation Ford Scorpio

nice car pity about the looks ;)

 - Now that I've seen these, it's has just been reduced to number 4 on my all time ugly list... What the h3ll is that red thing ?....

That red car is a Toyota Solara.

Ford have convinced me too, that their two listed cars here are not the best in their class.

Crown Vic vs. 300C and LeSabre. Clearly the LeSabre is the worst in the class, has the image of a geriatric 80 year old man and the performance to match, although Buick now builds extremely reliable cars. But the 300C easily takes this class, performance, luxury, and practicality all in one package.

500 vs. Impala, Avalon, Maxima, and GP is a bit more tricky. Money aside, the Maxima easily takes this class with performance, practicality, and Nissan build quality. As for a cheaper option, the Impala pwns the 500, since I know some people who own them, and they are great cars by all accounts. It's also surprisingly good on fuel! As for the Avalon and GP, I don't see too many of these on the road compared to the Maxima and Impala, so I don't think many people are missing out on something too special here.

But as far as the 500 goes, I think it is the most bland, generic car ever. It is the most bland car I have ever seen in terms of styling as far as the last 10 years. As for the rest of the car, it appears to be very, well, average for it's class. The only thing that appears to set it apart from it's class is cargo space. Ford claims it can hold 8 golf bags in it's trunk, which is not a small feat.

But, I'll wait until some reviews of this car come in before I formulate an opinion, these are just first impressions I have.

That Ford 500 looks heavily based on the series two Mondeo (euro designed ford) the Jag X-Type shares its platform, and as Firebird stated - J Mays designed the series 2 Mondeo, after he left VW.

The best car in the class, all-inclusive, is the Nissan Maxima, both trims, followed by the Grand Prix GTP. I haven't driven the Five Hundred yet, obviously. The Crown Victoria is much worse than the LeSabre.

My father used to have that car, about 5 years ago. He sold it, when my friend and I ruined the gearbox :). My friend put it in "P" (parking position), while the car was still moving. Next thing was the sound of metal tearing apart. :)
Anyways, it wasn't that bad looking. Rear end looks nice. And it is the second generation of Scorpio, but the scorpio is just renamed granada, so you can also say it is fourth generation granada (Mk1 & Mk2 = Granada, Mk3 & Mk4 = Scorpio).

How fast was the thing moving? (heh, I used to do it in Dad's Aries on the ice... lock up the wheels and slide around)

Also, what the hell is it?

It was about 10-15 mph. Not really fast.

The car is 1998 Ford Scorpio. Or was that 1997? I can't remember exactly. It is a european model. I don't think it was sold anywhere else except Europe.

Didn't some of those model scorpios come with a 2.3 V6 tuned by cosworth?

And that 500contains hints of mondeo. Would it be in the same class as it as well?
