Although 84 Mark 1 GT40's were made and many were road registered, they were not road cars, but were lightly modified race cars, complete with 4 weber carbs.

In 1967 Ford made available to the public for $18,500 ($2,000 more than a Mark 1 Race Car) the Ford GT40 Mark 3 Road Car. The headlamps were raised and altered to meet federal safety regulations and the rear was extended to create room for luggage space. The interior was more fully upholstered and the seats were normal ones instead of the air cooled seats from the race model. The exhaust system was quieter and the engine was changed for a 306bhp single four barrel carb type as used in the Shelby GT350 Mustang. The car still featured a five speed ZF gearbox and race bred chassis and brakes. For a 1967 road car performance was outstanding with 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds, 0-100 mph in 12.2 seconds and a top speed of 175 mph.

Unfortunately, although it seems ridiculously cheap compared with today's inflated prices, $18,500 was a huge amount of money in 1967 and only 7 were sold.

Above road test images from 1967. Although I would much rather have the 1966 Le Mans winning 7 litre Mark 2 GT40 in the game, every variant of the GT40 has special historical significance and deserves to be in the game especially this model which was the only version built purely for road use.
