Ford is one of one of the most prominent makes in the NASCAR Winston Cup and Ford branded cars have one the cup on many occassions. For 2003 Matt Kenseth, driving a Roush DeWalt Taurus, won the cup with a 90 point lead over Jimmie Johnson, and over 200 points ahead of Dale Earnhardt Jr., even though Kenseth only won 1 race (UAW Daimler-Chrysler 400), while Chevrolet won the Manufactures Championship.

2003 was the final year for Winston sponsorship of NASCAR's premier series, with NEXTEL picking up sponsorship in 2004, and this was also the final season before the "Chase For The Cup" points system was utilized, which was done because of Kenseth's huge lead despite only winning 1 race.
