Formula Fusion - by former Wipeout devs

I think you need to mention the fact that it's by former Wipeout devs in the thread title, I can't think of any other reason why there aren't people here gushing with anticipation!

I can't wait to see how this turns out, although at the moment the ship movement is a bit weird; for something with mostly horizontal control surfaces they sure do yaw a lot and roll very little... I reckon this may be made in Unity, actually, though that's not a bad thing.

Fair enough - I'd perhaps erroneously thought that curiosity might have been a sufficient drive.

Here's a bit more info. I'm not sure how I feel about the ships, being floating F1 cars without wheels as they are, but I'm sure it'll grow on me (if the game is good). I get the feeling the old Wipeouts were relatively expensive so I wonder where they're getting the funding for this? Or maybe a Kickstarter is to come? Mod support would be nice, too... Even if it'll probably just result in all of Wipeout's assets being ported over somehow by the community. Not that that would be an entirely bad thing, of course.

True, whilst the F1 styling is a departure, I rather liked the wide variety to the Wipeout vehicles. I suppose though that they have some limitations and cannot just bring any game assets over to this new title without Sony's say so.

It's all still early work, but I think they're right, there is definitely that feel from the old game to it all in what we've seen.

EDIT: I'm a bit mystified by the lack of interest too...

A few more stills from the Kickstarter page. I like the look of the tracks. Once again, really surprised that more folks haven't picked up on this...

A no-brainer for me, WipEout HD Fury was the best game I played on PS3 by a country mile. A Platinum trophy worthy game that I notched 600 hours playing time in. Hopefully this is even half as good!

Yeah, I'm super excited about this. I thought last time I checked their Kickstarter they were still quite far off their target, I'm so relieved they made it. The best part is the PC release, of course...

It already looks like it handles great, let's hope it gets the polish it needs and recaptures what made 2097 and Wip3out so great. This has been a great year for racing games already and it's only May!

Ship could do with a bit more 'bounce' to be more like 2097 I'd say!

Yeah, it definitely needs some work, but for such an early build I'd say they're off to a good start! The Steam early access build is coming in September, after all.

Definitely, I really hope they bring the ship designs a more original look too.

I used to love WipEout, but felt they went too far with the dirty industrial vibe. Fusion was good because it had some variety, but the subsequent games just felt repetitive.

I think they need to work on their environments a little bit from a graphical standpoint. I know HD was basically a remaster but I would expect more realism (in context) from the tracks with additions like weather and other elements. The tracks looks too lifeless and for this gen they really have to step things up.

I'd say that HD Fury felt like a completely different setting over the original games. Very clean and pristine looking.
I felt it was pretty repetitive. Sharp graphics, but a fairly limited colour palette. Whereas Fusion had the tropical Mandarashee, the frozen Cubiss Float, and the dark and dirty Vohl Square.

No news for a while, just had a browse through their site though and even though it's a good few months old, this looks like a good chunk of info about where the game will be going. March 2016 eh?

Has anyone bought into this on Steam yet? I keep seeing it sitting on my wishlist at £15 but every time I get tempted enough to look at the store page, the reviews saying "it's good but it's too early to recommend" put me off again. Maybe if I have a spare bit of cash at the end of next month I'll pick it up.

just buy it,... i am awaiting the ps4 release,... its from the makers of wipeout,.... it must be good if you like wipeout!!!

I'm not sure I follow your logic, but since I got some free money because I backed Project CARS I figured I'd just buy it anyway. Problem is my PC isn't even plugged in right now, but I might get around to sorting that out this weekend.

Edit: I plugged my PC in, finally, and gave Formula Fusion a go. It's got a lot of promise but it's still quite early on. I was never much good at Wipeout if I'm honest but this does feel a bit off (though I'm sure it'll be fixed), it's like the initial steering input is as responsive as you'd expect from Wipeout, but then changing direction is much slower. It's as though when you change direction the ship ignores your input, returns to a level position and then accepts your input, instead of you actually influencing the change of direction with aircraft-like control surfaces. But I expect that'll change. It also has a cockpit view and the Niagara circuit has this bit where you go under a waterfall, it's so amazing that I find it hard to concentrate on flying.

That handling still looks hella nasty. Hope they clean it up before release. :yuck:
Well, it is lots better than the first version which you can see on their website ;) and that gives me hope they'll make it more fluid and natural.

Well, it's out now (on PC, of course), I feel like it could've done with more time but it's decent enough and fairly priced at £15. It doesn't have WipeOut's slick, super cool feel and I've encountered some weird stuff - like doing a single race on Elite difficulty in the ship that looks like an F1 car and somehow being far, far faster than everyone else, to the point where I'd fly so high off of jumps that it'd explode me and reset me to 10th place even though I was lapping people - but when it works it does feel pretty good. Except the frame rate is pretty bad even on my GTX 1080/i5 4690k, though that is at 1440p.

Hopefully they'll keep working on it and get it finished properly, but I think I'll probably pick it up every now and then. With eight circuits (with day and night and reverse layouts of each, sort of giving four layouts), five (I think) difficulties and five ships it's a decent amount of game for £15, but it all feels a bit bargain basement. It's just missing the details that made WipeOut feel so special to me.
