Formula One 2001 (not EA) help

I just borrowed this from my friend, and I'm using my DFP, and my F1 just stops, and I can't accelerate. Mostly after I spin out. I have failures off, assists off, and other setting for difficulty on. This is keeping me from liking this game completely. Any help?
PS2 version, again the one by 989 Sports, not the EA F1 2001.

Edit: Figured it out. Hold X and the accelerator while in neutral to ignite the engine.

Now, I need some help calculating gear ratios, 'cause my 6th gear is incredibly short, and 7th is wider than it should be.
Is there a formula for finding gear ratios?

Is there a default?
I work by the formula of every alteration you make to a gear make the same alteration to the rest.
Altenitively ask an engineer or do some trial and error tests.
