Well I hate to be one of those annoying users who creates a new thread as their first post, but I promise that I used the search function and found that there was a surprising lack of discussion about this topic.

So first I'd like to provide a little background information as to why I joined this message board specifically to create this thread. I've been playing GT since GT2. I've been a huge fan of the series for many years. I bought a PS3 very early in its lifespan for the sole purpose of playing GT5 and I bought a Logitech G27 wheel before GT5 even came out! But needless to say, those decisions have bitten me in the ass and I've finally lost all faith in PD.

Now I want to switch to Forza, but alas, I'm not rich. I figure that in order to afford Forza and some sort of Fanatec wheel with pedals and a shifter (Logitech wheels aren't compatible with Xbox 360s and I refuse to play without a decent wheel), I'll need to sell my PS3, my PS3 games, and my Logitech G27. This will likely result in a pretty sizable loss for me and I'm reluctant to take this loss since I know next-gen consoles are around the corner and I know they're going to be $500+. With my current financial situation, I absolutely cannot afford to sell my PS3, buy a 360, and then sell the 360 and buy a next-gen Xbox one year later.

That's why I would really like to know if Forza 5 is going to be on the next-gen Xbox versus the Xbox 360. I only own a console for sim-racing and nothing more. If Forza 5 is going to be on the 360, then I can afford to buy a 360 right now and enjoy Forza 4 and 5 without having to worry about buying a next-gen console until about two years into its lifespan, when Forza 6 comes out. But if Forza 5 is going to be on the next-gen Xbox, I think I'm better-suited just sticking it out with GT5 for another year or two and then buying the next-gen Xbox and Forza on launch day.

So what are your thoughts on whether Forza 5 will come out on the Xbox 360 or the next-gen Xbox? Any input would be greatly appreciated as I'm not as familiar with the Microsoft's implications for releasing a next-gen console versus Sony's. After all, at GTPlanet we've had multiple threads that span literally hundreds of pages dedicated to whether GT6 will be on PS3 or PS4. You guys meanwhile, well it seems like you've barely ever discussed it.

Thanks for reading!

I personally think it will be on the Next Gen. Forza 4 is the furthest they can go on the Xbox 360. If they were to have Forza 5 on Xbox 360 then it would be the exact same as Forza 4 , graphically physically (I guess).

I'd say it's a sure bet that Forza 5 will be on the Xbox 720. As phillkillv2 alluded to, Forza 4 essentially tapped out the 360 graphically. It's obvious when you see the lack of anti-aliasing and 30 fps rear-view mirrors. FM4 looks great, but you can tell where they had to make concessions in order to maintain 60 fps.

The Forza series has a dedicated following and Microsoft knows this, so it makes sense that they would urge T10 to bring the next in the series to the new platform to sell systems. With Horizon on the... horizon (I'm here all week, folks)... this seems like a stop gap to hold "most" fans over while the next in the FM series is launched.

Since it's almost set in stone that the next generation will start in 2013, I say hold on to your wallet and wait. While I hate to deter anyone away from FM4, I can understand that putting money into a system that will quickly lose support after a replacement is released isn't the greatest idea. Plus, the extra time could allow you to save up for either the XCM F-1 Converter V.2 for your G27 (assuming it would work on the 720), or a bright new shiny Fanatec.

Unless you have the means to pick up the Star Wars edition 360. That's just baller!

Yeah, I figured most of the responders would feel this way. Realistically, it does seem kind of unlikely that Microsoft would want T10 to produce Forza 5 for the 360 when the next-gen Xbox is probably a year away and would greatly benefit from Forza being a launch title.

While it'll honestly hurt to watch Forza owners receive their DLC every month while I settle for 15 variations of the GT-R (or more recently, the Toyobaru FT-86 thing), it'll ultimately save me money that I can use to buy a next-gen Xbox when it's released.

And that Star Wars Xbox is freaking awesome, especially those controllers! 👍

More replies are welcome by the way! I would still love to see a contrasting viewpoint. :)

Gotta agree that it'll probably be on the next Xbox. FM4 is already a two-disc affair that takes forever to load and made clear sacrifices to meet T10's 60fps mandate. Not that I think it's a bad game, just limited.

However, I would disagree that the game is only worth playing with a wheel. The controls are very well-tuned for the gamepad -- you get a choice of two steering modes (in addition to the "assisted" mode), and the sweet spot on the left trigger for threshold braking is much easier to find than in previous Forza titles -- and from personal experience the 360 controller is much more comfortable than the PS3's, particularly when attempting to use L2/R2 for the throttle and brake.

I don't see why you have to go all-or-nothing. If you already have a PS3 for your gaming needs, and only want a 360 for Forza, why not pick up an older used 360 for a low price? Then you can enjoy GT5 and FM4 while waiting for the next round, play GT5 whenever you're in the mood for wheel action, and maybe check out some other 360-exclusives from the past few years if any of them interest you...and if your old 360 goes RROD on you, you have nothing to lose in attempting to fix it, you still have all your PS3 games to play, and if it can't be fixed, the next generation is around the corner anyway.

As Hal20xx conveniently pointed out, Microsoft has released plenty of versions and "editions" of 360s. Some people will upgrade just to have a newer or more fashionable model, so not all of the consoles on the used market are necessarily worn out.

I've gotten so used to playing with a wheel that I can't ever see myself going back to a gamepad without feeling as if I'm cheating myself out of a better experience. Also, I've played Forza 4 with a gamepad, and for some reason I always have a hard time controlling the throttle as opposed to when I use my friend's wheel. Of course I'd probably get used to playing Forza using a gamepad at some point, but I'd almost rather not go through that learning curve.

The other reason that I can't see myself buying a cheap 360 and keeping my PS3 is the fact that racing sims are really the only games that hold my interest at this time in my life. I'll probably buy GTA V when it comes out, but other than that, I have no need for two consoles since the games I'd only being playing 3 games between both systems- GT5, Forza, and GTA V.

It is nice to know that there's so many special editions of the 360, though. Reliability and fanboyism towards Sony and GT were actually my driving forces in buying a PS3 versus a 360, so I'm glad to know that reliability may not be as much of an issue as I thought it would be if I chose to go that route.

Depends on how badly you need Forza?..........the car selection.........the awesome engine sounds........the advanced tyre simulation.........you know you want it?

Yours Sincerely
THE DEVIL

The only question mark is really about the Fanatec. Will they work with the next console. I have to think they would. Especially when they just launched that super-wheel. Would really piss alot of people off to buy a 500 dollar wheel for only 2 years of use.

The next generation of consoles is almost here, anyways, so, yeah, I'd say it wouldn't make sense at all to produce FM5 for the 360. I've been suspecting that a next-gen Xbox would be due in late 2013. That would match Forza's development cycle quite conveniently to boot.

Thus, I'm fairly sure that Forza Horizon will be the last Forza game on the 360.

as for the Fanatec, I seriously can't see MS making the mistake of not making tthe next Xbox not compatible with the current wheels. A lot of people would be pretty darn pissed, I'd assume. I'm fairly sure that MS knows that just as well.

With the new xbox not getting announced at E3 this year I think FM5 will be for the 360 and that will surely be the last on the 360 unless they wait longer than the normal 2 years between titles.

Sell logitech G27
Buy a used arcade xbox 360
Buy a 16GB flash drive
Buy a Fanatec wheel (either a used one with some warranty still left, or the CSR XL package)
Buy a new copy of FM4

A reasonably cheap way to play on both current consoles, plus you have some sort of deposit for next gen by selling the PS3 and Xbox.

My guess is FM5 will be on the next xbox, maybe even a launch title which would force me to buy the next xbox at launch. I'm going to hold off on buying next gen consoles around launch time. As is I have a MASSIVE game backlog on both 360 and PS3. Gave up on Wii since I only liked it for playing smash bros and the occasional Mario or Zelda game. And I don't mind if FM5 comes out next gen and we wait another year for it. We're getting Forza Horizon, which I'm more into real track based racing but FH is day1 for me.

You don't think that Microsoft can unveil the next-gen Xbox at E3 2013 and still sell it around Christmas 2013?

I'm actually trying to do this, but finding a decent, used Fanatec wheel is proving to be very difficult and I'm still having trouble justifying the purchase of a 360 only to sell it for a moderate loss one year later.

No. There will still be allot of things that will most likely happen at E3 that will cause them to make some changes to the console. Just look at the Wii U. was shown last year but not coming out until the end of this year.

I kinda agree with Chris. I hope they take their time and make a better quality product with the next Xbox. The reliability of the first gen 360 was terrible. I hope we don't see the new system until the end of 2014 at least....so Forza 5 would be on the 360.

I agree with them needing to create a better product, but I also get the sense that Microsoft is trying to become more "Apple" like with their product announcements. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them shortening the gap between the announcement and retail delivery of their product. Obviously we won't hear, "...and it's already in stores!" like we do from Apple, but given how competitive this next gen will be, they'll need to move product to market quick so that the competition has less time to react.

So you're in the camp that thinks the next xbox will be on the market before the PS4?

I'm not sure which camp I'm in to be fair. One thing is for certain, neither MS or Sony seem to be in any hurry or worry to counter the Wii U
Either the PS4 & 720 will be much more powerful than the Wii U, or they've both dropped the ball by giving the Wii U such a big head start. By all accounts it's looking like the latter if that leaked 720 document and rumoured PS4 specs are anything to go by.

They really really should put Forza 5 on the next gen console. There is just no reason at all to work on one for the 360. They should just keep supporting Forza 4.

Thanks for reading!

I would make the switch anyway, like yourself i was fed up with the borefest that was GT and for an even 200 bucks i had the Xbox pack with the game included. So sell all the stuff you have now (PS3, wheel and games), and i'm sure you have the money to get properly set up on "the other side". It is definitely worth it as Forza 4 will keep you playing for the next couple of years 4 sure (or until you have the funds to buy xbox 720 in 2013 at the earliest), it really is that good, enjoyable and addictive.

Ps i was a GT fan from GT1 anno 1997 onwards ;)

In order to stay competitive, the next FM game will absolutely need weather and night/day transitions. These things are not feasible it seems on the current gen system with Forza's graphics engine.

UPDATE: I ended up majorly splurging and buying myself an Xbox 360 yesterday on impulse. I figured that the Racing Bundle was a fairly good deal as I think I can sell the wireless wheel that comes with it as long as I keep it sealed in its package.

And fortunately I don't regret my decision at all. Outside of a less than stellar track list and a few other small omissions, Forza 4 is fantastic game. Now I plan on selling my G27 wheel as others have suggested throughout this thread, and then putting that money towards a Fanatec wheel.

So thank you guys for encouraging me to buy a 360, it was certainly one of the better things that's happened to me in a while. :)

Also I've mulled over the question that I originally posed in the thread title, and I've come to the conclusion that I think Forza 5 will be on the next-gen Xbox. Turn 10 pretty much stretched the 360 to its limit with Forza 4. In addition I don't think it would make too much financial sense for Microsoft to allow Forza 5 to be developed for the 360. If Forza is anywhere close to being a launch title for the next-gen Xbox, a huge amount of GT players will make the switch to Forza since GT on PS4 isn't expected to be released in a timely manner.

They really really should put Forza 5 on the next gen console. There is just no reason at all to work on one for the 360. They should just keep supporting Forza 4.

If the rumours are true that Turn 10 may be working on another expansion pack, then this may be what the plan is. It would help to expand the two year life cycle of the game for sure. It was suggested the pack would be shown at E3 2012, but it wasn't so we don't know if the idea is canned or not.

Welcome to the club :D You kept your PS3 right? With the ownership of both consoles you get the best of both worlds.

Something you may also want to consider is buying Forza 3, still a great game, and it was made for this generation which means it's ageing very well. Buy the 'Ultimate collection/platinum' version for the maximum content, all DLC inc. That will give you a few tracks and cars to play with that are not in FM4 for very little cost.

Make sure to buy Race Pro too if you want another xbox Exclusive race Sim, it isn't pretty and can be a bit buggy, but the physics are great and it feels superb with a wheel. Also plenty of tracks included rarely seen on console games. Shop around and get it cheap.

Very doubtful that the new 360 is coming out next year.

Yeah, for sure. They'll want maximum sales from the few exclusive and 1st party games + DLC that release late this year. Word is, Hardware sales of the 360 and Kinect hasn't shown signs of dropping off yet, so they will want to maximize those too as they've only just started turning a profit on them.

I think Early to Mid 2014 at the soonest.

Haha thanks! :) And yes, I kept my PS3 as I personally believe GT6 will be released on the PS3 rather than the PS4.

And I'll definitely pick up Race Pro around Christmas since I've heard nothing but good things about that game's physics. As for FM3, I'll probably end buying that too, partially because I want to buy a couple of cars that are now unicorns in FM4.

Agreed, the track list is the biggest damper on my FM4 experience. I've stopped asking for tracks though because Horizon is coming along to give me something much better. :)

If you like driving, and not just track racing, you should check out that subforum if you haven't already.

Fair warning, the driving improved leaps and bounds from FM3 -> FM4. Though personally I think the tire model is really the only thing that changed.

Congrats on the new console.

I agree. In fact I wont buy Forza 5 if it doesnt have weather and night racing. Thats coming from someone thats been a fan of the series since the beginning. Instead of putting one out every 2 years, take extra time and get some weather into the game.

Well, despite them not looking very great, GT5's rain effects are pretty technically brilliant. The rain drops actually have mass and move about on the windscreen. In the F1 games and PGR, it's simply a pre-baked, visual effect. For instance, if you stop your car in PGR4, the rain will continue to streak across the windshield...which is odd. If the resolution of the rain on GT5 was increased, it would look absolutely fantastic and real.

To add to your post. No bad rain effects. Like GT5. Look at the F1 games rain!
Exactly. If they put rain into F5, do it right like PGR4, Dirt 3, or the F1 games.

Your post reminds me of the meme from GTplanet.
