The Formula One Teams' Association, FOTA, will discuss a new qualifying format for the sport when the body meets next month.

FOTA is looking to spice up qualifying, currently divided in three sessions, two of them including a knockout system.

The new idea to be looked at consists of all cars jumping onto the track at the same time and with the same amount of fuel, with the slowest driver being eliminated after each lap.

After 14 laps, the six fastest drivers would then fight for pole position, fitting new tyres but still using the same amount of fuel.

The proposal might even include a championship point for pole position and prize money.

The current format, where the ten quickest drivers fight for the top spot in the final session with an amount of fuel decided by the teams, often sees pole position going to a car that's lighter than the rest.

FOTA will meet on December 4 and if the proposed format is agreed upon by all teams, it is expected to be submitted to the FIA for approval.

I like the qualifying format as it is, but who knows, this could be interesting.

Bit of a bitch if someone spins infront of you though.....

Then the driver who spins will no doubt be slower than the people slowing down to avoid him :).

Bring back the Qualifying format from early 2005, 1 hotlap with low fuel + 1 hotlap with race fuel = great

That way we get to see every lap from start to finish for every driver, love that.

Well I have to disagree with this one, sounds too risky to be done. I mean to have the whole grid racing for pole position will have some complications if there was an accident of sorts...... Yeah, but at least it would give a chance for the lower team to sneak up onto the middle of the grid for the race..... :D

Completely agreed! :)

I think this is a fantastic idea! Qualifying will be so much more exciting than normal!

Its not exactly boring and uneventful now. To be honest I like the way it is, the fuel in the final round means that its unlikely that the fastest driver/car is always going to get the pole and then run away at the front.

It also has the effect of changing the balance of the car, which can make results interesting. Though this is probably why this is happening, no doubt some drivers are complaining about it.

When I heard of further rule changes I was ready to facepalm...

...but actually this sounds exciting, although I must say that I quite enjoy qualifying as it is now, part of me thinks 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' but then again the idea actually sounds pretty decent, I can imagine almost every lap being intense.

I don't see a problem with this. It's a part of the strategy that the teams have to figure out.

I like the current format... the fuel in the last round makes figuring out who's going on pole even more exciting... and the bonus of a "free fuel strategy" for guys finishing outside the top ten evens out the field even more (see how guys with a clever fuel strategy have gotten up to the podium on incident-filled or wet races).

of course, giving points to the top qualifiers in the first two sessions (not the final session... getting pole position is good enough) would be interesting. That would mean everybody would drive like a rabid dog in the early qualifiers, instead of having some front-runners hold back till the last session, settling for middling positions in Q1 and Q2 and turning the wick up in Q3.

Do we really want this?

Senseless and daft. Qualifying are hotlaps - 1, 4, 9 over three sessions, aggregated, fumes or race-fueled - not races.

What's wrong with the current system? Ditch the race-loads, and we should be good to go. One-lap shootouts sound a little too luck-based for me, and also depend too much on the conditions during your alloted lap. Basically, last man to run gets an almost 3-4 tenths advantage on the first guys!

I'd like it if they kept the first two sessions as they are now but then switch to a one at a time pure qualifying run for the last ten runners in the last session.

Single car on the track is BORING. I hated it when they did that, and those events where the weather came in during the session made it completely unfair, just luck of the timing.

Before single-car, they had 12 laps allowed during a 1-hour session, meaning 4 timed laps (out, hot, in, done 4 times). That was theoretically pretty accurate, but you ended up with 49 minutes of empty track, an occasional setup run by one car or another, then everybody out at once at the end. Might as well have had a single 10-minute session.

The proposal is so far beyond unfair that it doesn't even warrant discussion. Pull the slowest car after his first lap? He's done?!??!? While his teammate, who didn't make the bobble in turn 9 gets as many as 14 laps?

The current system is the best I've seen in any series at keeping cars on the track where fans and TV audiences can see something going on for the entire session, and that's what people buy tickets for, and what they tune in for.

I think we've had enough rule changes for 2009 with the new aero regs, KERS, and slicks coming back. The medals thing Bernie proposed is stupid and qualifying is fine as it is.

I like the proposal, but it might be too much. Maybe for '10.

If Bernie doesn't ruin everything.
