And it would've happened much sooner if I had been using this latest one more often. To recap my issues, my first 360 got hit by a power surge and fried just the ethernet adapter (that took about 2 hours on the phone to make the "tech" understand what I knew was the problem), the replacement for that had a RRoD, its replacement ended up with a faulty fan that would eventually cause a single light I think...whichever code is for overheating. Eventually it failed I think...And now this one has a RRoD.

With my last replacement I was actually handed over to Microsoft (not Xbox Tech Support, a third party) and had an agent who would be handling all of my problems from that point on. I conveniently have lost her number in the last two years or so that this system has been here. Long story short, they want $119 to replace my console with yet another refurb.

I refuse to give them my money, so I'm weighing my options on how to get a working console. I can get a brand new arcade model for $199. To me that seems like the smartest way to go, avoiding the short warranties provided by a refurbished unit. The same thing keeps me from thinking about getting a used system.

The point of this thread is to see if anyone has a method/source of getting a new console. If Forza 3 wasn't coming out this would be the end of my Microsoft console career.

Just go look for a guy around your town that repairs the xbox rrod. In my country a lot of advertisment from guys who say they can fix it for around 30-40 euros.

I have a 360 and it failed on me one time now. Also had a controller that broke.
This is one piece of **** hardware.

Let me finish my complaining for a bit:
The fans make a lot of noise, really unacceptable to have it on a desk with you.
The fans are really quiet, if you compare is to the DVD drive! It's a freaking drill on your desk! This thing s**** big time, I'm surprised so many people put up with this(I do to). If the thing would break on me one more time I wouldn't bother, and trough it into the trash. I also have a quality console from sony, that has everything i need and more.

Had to get this of my chest, been bothering my sometime know. When I bought the Xbox 360 I thought it would be PS3 like quality, well not even close.

Yes, it's ridiculous. I'm on my third console now. It's completely unacceptable but yet I still play the damned thing because I just love the games I have. Nothing electronic/electic broke when I was a kid, and now everything I buy has a life expectancy of about 18 months before it starts showing problems or just flat out breaks. I threw a $400 Canon camera out of a taxi window out of frustration (it was still under warranty) which was idioitic, but boy did it feel good at the time seeing it smash to a thousand pieces on the tunnel wall.

Looks like a perfect opportunity to try to fix it yourself. The Arcade version sounds like a good idea, since you can transfer over the hard drive. Then you can sell the controller if you don't need it.

My brother's two 360s have been running fine so far.

And I'm sure I could have had a good one if they had stopped shipping me refurbs and given out a new one at one point. =\

I'm kind of leaning towards getting an arcade model soon, then maybe getting the broken repaired locally if possible and selling it...

for pete' sake. there's a site on the net for repairing these things. why does everybody bother with tech support? you bought it, they have a rep, so screw it, and crack the case, if they didn't use special screws.

I bought a $199 Arcade when I had my first one fail because I didn't want to deal with Microsoft's refurb and support. You can probably fix it yourself as well just so you know. When my first 360 failed, I got E74 and 2 red rings. I've since fixed it (months after I got the $199 arcade unit) by putting all the components in a PC case for improved airflow, applying thermal paste on the processor and video card, and a friend of mine soldered a pin on the video scaler chip that didn't look proper.

Link?

I ordered a RROD kit off Ebay. Came with directions on how to fix it, had the screws/washers/thermal paste/everything to fix. Kit cost like $10 I think. It wasn't expensive at all and I got it within a week

Call back again and just tell them you have the RROD. Dont give them a story or anything. Just say you have the RROD and they will fix it for free. Or just go get the arcade an swap your HD to that.

The not so funny thing about all these RROD happenings is. THEY KNEW THIS WOULD HAPPEN!!!!! If you bought your XBox 360 prior to 2008, it isn't a matter of {IF it will happen}. It's a matter of {When will it happen}. Playing with the unit laying flat and in a good ventilated area will slow down the process. But it will go RROD. Guaranteed! :nervous:

True. Especially if you play as much as my gf and I do. I am on my 4th she is on her 5th and we take unbelievable care of them. The 360 is just a junk console. But it sure has a massive library of awesome games.

Mine ran fine, but the console and the accessories are mega Chinese quality. The reason why that you got a RROD is because you don't keep the console ventilated in an open shelf. Stop replacing the 360 and don't place the open shelf too close to the wall. Believe me, it works that way.

Oh, I thought it was more to do with Microsoft being a bunch of cheapasses and not properly soldering the GPU solder joint. And then further being cheapasses by only having case fans, not heatsink fans.

Funny, because my system does sit on an open shelf. Hm. Wonder why I got an RRoD.

What do you mean by Xbox Tech Support being a "third party"?

The 1-800-4MY-XBOX number is to Xbox Tech Support. They aren't owned by Microsoft. I don't really remember how I found that out, maybe it was when I was forwarded to the actual Microsoft agent that helped me out on my previous return.
