Just got a tip from my brother that they were playing Foxboro Hot Tubs down in New Jersey on the ol' frequency modulation band this weekend. This "secret" band is pretty obviously another in a funny line of Green Day side projects (among Pinhead Gunpowder and The Network - both worth checking out). They had their EP online, downloadable without any form, fee or DRM protection for a few weeks but then took it down after mainstream exposure. The album's got very Warning-esque melodies but also some American Idiot/Jesus of Suburbia lyrical presence, along with the obvious retro feel.

They now have a couple tracks on their Myspace page, so check it out if you aren't a Green Day hater.

It's definitely a new take on the usual Green Day style. I absolutely loved Nimrod, and forever disliked Warning, but this has enough progression of that regular GD feel to get my nod of approval.

For some good laughs, also check out The Network, a joke sideproject rumored to be a Green Day and Devo collaboration. It's got some pretty weird new wave bits, but isn't really meant to be taken seriously, as made obvious by their little local gigs around California a few years ago.

It's good to see big name artists still kicking it local and releasing free DRM-free music when they could just as easily be selling out stadiums at 40$ a head. Hate Green Day or not, you can't deny that fact.
