After a bit of trotting about, we've come to week 1's four nominees for Cool Wall placement, in order:

1. 1983 Audi Sport Quattro
2. 1977 Aston Martin V8 Vantage
3. 2005 TVR Sagaris
4. 1957 Ferrari 250 California

Let the voting commence!

EDIT: Ugh. I forgot to allow multiple votes, so for this week vote only for the car you think belongs where, and next week you'll be allowed to vote for placement on every car as normal. Also, don't forget to sound off below in a Top Gear-like manner on the reasons you think the car belongs where you've voted

Audi Sport Quattro, cool (almost sub-zero), and here's why:

Rallying has changed a lot over the years.

Now we have Ford Fiesta, Citroen DS3 and Mini JCW, but back in the nineties there was Subaru Impreza and Mitsubishi Lancer, Toyota Celica and Ford Escort.

And back in the eighties there was Group B: Peugeot 205, Lancia Delta, MG Metro 6R4, and the Audi Quattro. High-powered monsters that had to be banned because they were deadly in the literal sense.

But enough remembering, why is the production Audi Quattro cool? Well, let the facts* do the talking:

- One of the first production cars ever to have 4WD.
- First AWD car on the World Rally Championship.
- First car to win Pikes Peak driven by a woman.

So it has pedigree. Also it's not flamboyant or has neon colored wheels or a spoiler the size of Venus, so you don't have to explain anything to potential boy/girlfriends that aren't car fans. Although if you have a date, picking it up in an "80's boxy Audi" isn't probably a good idea. One more thing: it's German, so it was built by engineers and people that knew what they were doing.

And boy did they know.

I'm not really used to waxing lyrical, so prepare for some word vomit!

Ferrari 250 California [voted sub-zero]

Back when Enzo was alive and kicking the backsides of anyone who dared question him, they produced genuinely stunning cars. Whether it was hours on a drawing board or seconds on the back of a napkin, anything that came out of the factory had the eternal envy of the women of Maranello. The 250 Calofirnia is perhaps the best example of this timeless beauty; and it is indeed timeless. The men, who even in the age of austerity, continue to pay millions of dollars for untouched originals will testify that not every old girl needs an ill-advised facelift or a hasty nip-tuck to remain pleasing to the eye.

Of course it helps if the subject of your desire has more going for her than a nice smile. And again, the 250 California is not lacking in this regard. As part of the most successful line of cars in the history of Ferrari, 250s can claim to have won any race in which they were eligible. Backed by a heavenly choir of twelve which amazingly was almost half the weight of most competing engines, 250s bolted off the starting line and galloped relentlessly to the finish. Tens of hours or hundreds of miles, it mattered not a jot to the prancing stallions.

That, in a nutshell, is the Ferrari 250 California. Truth be told, a car this iconic does not need to worry about such fleeting matters as "coolness". It has nothing left to prove or to gain. However, if you had to lower it to the level of common folk, then let me put it this way;

It would be right at home in the Antarctic winter.

Maybe it's me but the way the poll was set up, I could only vote for one car. Anyone else having problems?

Reading, it's good for ya!

Whoever it was that cast the vote on the California and not one of the actual options will not count toward the final tally.

I'll update the Cool Wall sometime today or tomorrow, but look out for the Week 2 nominees coming along later today.
