I'm sure you all have heard about the Catholic priest sex abuse scandal, which had it's own little episode here in Phoenix. Arch Bishop O'Brian reassigned priests known to have molested kids without telling anyone. So in exchange for his cooperation he got off, provided he sign what amounted to a confession. This was about two weeks ago. The day after he signed he lied to the press about it. Pretty sneaky. But it gets even better...

Saturday night at about 8:35 a pedestrian was killed while crossing the street in a hit and run. Witnesses identified a tan Buick, which was traced to Arch Bishop O'Brian. When the police went to his house they found his windshield smashed on one side, and other damage to the front of the car. Other priests knew the cops were looking for him and called to tell him to turn himself in. Instead he started calling around to get his windshield replaced.

What a snake.

To see his humiliated red Irish face on TV and on the paper makes me sick. It has nothing to do with Christianity or any of it's denominations. It has to do with being a decent human being. But one ought to be able to reasonably expect an Arch Bishop to be somewhat honest, marginally decent, no matter what your beliefs. But I guess that's too much to expect. What a disappointment.

In case anybody wonders, Fox News did a close-up of his license plate, which I hurriedly wrote down (547-HBE). He didn't have the 'Prevent Child Abuse' tags because he was responsible for most of Arizona's child abuse cases. Oh, and because he was a cheap bastard.

The funniest thing is that he denies it, yet he does admit to being in the area at the time, and his windshield is smashed in. What a dope.

Edit - he also bought the absolutely base-spec Buick LeSabre, too. I'm thinking (because he's a cheap bastard) he either got a great deal from one of his priest buddies who he covered up for or got it rental-return.

He should be nailed to a large metal rod, and then bee thrown into a thunderstorm, then whatever corpse he has should be light on fire and thrown into a mess of dog crap.

When all those Priest sex abuse scandals were going large with the media, it just sickened me.

They are not men of God, and don't deserve to wear that collar. I say they be treated no differently than those other child molestors and rapists. If not they deserve a worser punisment than those men, because like snakes they deceived God's people and shattered their faith.

Dunno. If I were Catholic, I would lose faith in the men, not in God. The actions of the men are sickening, but their actions don't speak for God. If I was Catholic, anyway.

I thik that guys that take a vow of chastity and hang around with altar boys have issues.

i never understood the priest-alter boy relationship....

btw, remember that episode of south park with the child molesting priests, that was well done.

I was an altar boy. Looking back on it I think I must not have been the priest-in-charge-of-altar-boys' type. He was definitely "off".

Yeah, that was pretty much what I was aiming at. You worded it better, though.

When the scandals were "at large" while I was attending my last year in a Catholic school, it really didn't scare me to be honest. I mean, I wondered, but I wasn't scared of the Priest. The only problem I had with him was his Religious discrimination. Unfortunately, it seems like Priests are receiving a bad representation simply because of these sicko's.

Yeah - and that really sucks. Because there's a bunch of people (*cough, milefile, cough*) who hate religion in general and the actions of a minority of priests just gives them more to rant about, despite the majority still being a trustworthy, truly caring bunch.

I think priests are cool. I don't buy into any of the generalizations about them because the are ture only in particular instances, just like in every other group. What makes them targets is everybody else's envy. It's impossible for the common person to comprehend the depth of devotion and passion that calls priests to their life's work. They have something that is totally lacking in almost everybody else. The single detail of celebacy is what everybody latches onto as perverse, abnormal, and suspicious. And all that proves is that rapture (passion, ecstacy) is mostly unknown. The sexual experience of it is only one particular manifestation among others in a constelation of religious experience. Those who have never had this experience of rapture not only can't comprehend the priests reasons for his devotion, but also can't experience or comprehend deep love. Love is a religious, trancendent experience. Priests are inclined toward a purely metaphysical experience of it. It is this purity that is supposed to bring them in tune with spiritual things and matters of the soul. There is value in that as long as the priest is honest.

So I am inclined toward religious types in these instances and for those reasons. There is nothing wrong with their decision to remain celebate, even if I wouldn't choose it. We all need to choose what makes life worth living. Those who pompously declare the priesthood as unnatural and wrong ought to show what makes them qualified to comment on the subject at all.

Religious types who understand their tradition and history, who work to reconcile it's contradictions and disgraces, putting each ugly and beautiful thing in the place that it belongs, are great people. People who claim to be religious types because god is a convenient psychologocal dumping ground for their inadequacies, short-commings, and ignorance deserve no respect. They are just weak.

This bishop this thread is about has disgraced his church and himself. I believe he knows the depth of his downfall. The pope accepted his resignation today. What's left for this former bishop? Looks like this is the begining of his hell. The thing about it that bothers me so much is precicely the fact that he knows what all this means, and wishes it weren't so. He evokes pity and that's pathetic.

So, you don't hate religion?

The pope accepted his resignation today.

That's a first, usually the pope's all too happy to let anybody and everybody keep whatever high position they hold.

The way people tend to talk about it around here? i.e. "People who claim to be religious types because god is a convenient psychologocal dumping ground for their inadequacies, short-commings, and ignorance deserve no respect. They are just weak." I just have no respect for it and can't stand how everybody acts like it's "truth" and bla bla bla. It's not even worth a strong feeling like hate.

Fair point. But don't let the wrong people see that.
