Fresh Install Rage!

Purchased a new slim PS3. Purchased GT5, steering wheel, 6-speed shifter, gas/brake/clutch. Ready to enjoy the sim!

Pop in the new game, watch the video on how to make a car, nice! Get to main screen, choose GT mode. GT logo appears and it says installing at the bottom right corner of screen. "Installing" disappears and it's just the GT logo...for 3 hours.

Figured the game was frozen. Pressed PS button and quit game. Started game again with similar results. Waited only 2 hours this time. Still on GT logo.

Ok, deleted game data and tried to reinstall. Same results.

Formatted the PS3. 7 hours later after the full format was done, popped in the game and same thing happens (or rather, NOTHING happens, LOL).

Game disc is flawless, no scratches, no fingerprints, nada!

Put in Assassins Creed and was able to play with no problems. Watched Avatar in Blu-Ray, no problems. Grand Theft Auto 4 had no problems.

Took game back to Wal-Mart and they let me exchange it. Put the new GT5 disc in and guess what...same problem. Took the game to my neighbors house and it installed and played just fine on his old fatty PS3. We had to wait about an hour for it to install, but after that, it worked great.

Before the format, the PS3 had the latest system updates. I thought perhaps that was the problem, maybe it didn't like the updates so I thought I would start fresh. Doesn't seem to install with or without the system updates present.

Can't understand why other games and movies will work and install just fine on my PS3 slim, but not this game. I've spent a nice chunk of change on my driving equipment to play this game and am determined to get it working...anyone have a solution or tips that I might try? I don't want to go bald pulling my hair out and I certainly don't want my wife to think that I spent $700+ only to find that it was a waste of money.

Please help!

Yeah,I had to do that too, should work fine after the update Saying that GT5 was the first game I tried.

Have you downloaded the updates?
There might be a problem there.
You could delete your game data and start all over, but first try this:

Disable your internet connection (In XMB menu)
When you get to the GT5 menu, don't go to GT mode.
Go to options.
At the bottom you can pre-install game data. Try that and see if it works. It should be done in approx. 50 min.

Ok, after the format of the PS3, I did not enable the internet connection because I had read on these forums that some of the updates had produced a lot of problems. Will delete all game data, enable the internet connection. Do you guys recommend ONLY doing the SYSTEM updates first then install, or update everything it asks me for, including game updates and then install?

@Vegard, I tried to get into the utilities screen to do a full install (as mentioned in other posts here), however, it did the same thing as going into GT Mode. It just displays the GT logo and never lets me into the Utilities screen to do the full install or change settings etc...Just the GT logo.

Ok, currently doing the 608MB update. Says there's 1/17 updates. Yikes! System is currently up to date as well. Will report back when the updates are done. If this doesn't work I am going to take the new PS3 back to Wal Mart and see if I can exchange it. Wal Mart is going to be sick of seeing me today.

One quick question.
Did you have a game save when you started up?
If you try to start a 2.01 or newer save on version 1.01 you get frozen screen, just like you described.

Try what these guys mentioned. ALSO, don't have your wheel plugged in when you're booting up the game, wait until you get to GT Home to plug it in. It might seen weird, but recently I had a problem with slow loading if I plugged in the wheel before I booted the game. Now, I boot the game, let everything load up, THEN I plug the wheel in. Works 100% again!

Good Luck!

EDIT: You have download all the GT5 updates to be able to get online. Also, a up-to-date PS3 system helps too. If you're downloading/installing everything from scratch (v1.0), be prepared for a long wait!

Thanks for all the tips and quick responses!

@Vegard - Everything has been deleted prior to the install. I never got far enough in the game to even create a save game.

@Bluntified - (nice name!) Nothing is currently plugged into the PS3 during install. Controller was charged up before I began the install to prevent any interference. The Logitech G27 I bought is still in the big box on the couch. Wasn't going to unbox it and break factory seals until I was SURE that the game would work. Updates almost done.

I did come across a video on youtube that I think will relate to me if I am unable to get the game to work. Do a search for "I just rage quit" on youtube. The opening scene shows a guy taking a hammer to his PS3! I think that may be what's going to happen if I can't get the darn game installed!

I had this problem and it was the my wirless internet connection.

I plugged in the ethernet cable and installed the problem was a fault with my wirless on my ps3.

@ChOs3n - I too switched over to an ethernet cord. The wireless was taking forever to download.

The updates are done downloading and installing. It asked me if I would like to install the game to the HDD to reduce the loading times of the game. It's at this part where I almost didn't buy the game to begin with. There was a lot of people here saying that the install would never complete, and some said that it would complete. I am going to give it up to 3 hours to complete the install. If after 3 hours it is still trying to install, I am going back to Wal Mart to exchange the PS3.

For me installing the game worked straight out the bat, also with a brand new slim. There's really no reason not to update everything you can, so it's a good thing that you've done that.

Install for me was pretty straight forward and certainly didn't take 3 hours. If it still crashes during install, there's something wrong with your PS3 I'm sure.

I can't imagine anything being wrong with the PS3 since two other games and a movie worked just fine. The disc is ok because it installed at my neighbors house. Not to mention that this is the second disc of the game. I already exchanged the first one back at Wal Mart. There was probably nothing wrong, but I am trying to figure out where the problem is here.

Been sitting at "24 seconds remaining" for about 20 minutes now. The HDD light isn't blinking like it did in the beginning. Should I continue to let it sit there? I would think that if the HDD light isn't blinking then nothing is happening. I hope I'm wrong.

There is a chance of a HDD file corruption, what you need to do if still fails, to check for file corruption and try to rebuild the database. First you will need to delete all GT5 related data ( save game + install data ). You need to get into recovery system menu :

1. shut down the ps3
2. press and hold the power button until the system beeps twice AND turns off again
3. press hold the power button until the system emits two fast beeps - let go

Recovery Mode

- Restart System: Restarts the system.
- Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
- Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
- Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for PS3
- Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; deletes everything and starts from scratch.

Try to do restore file system, then rebuild database, if GT5 still have issues installing, try restore PS3 system.

Ok, 2 hours and it's still sitting at "24 seconds remaining" and no HDD light activity. Time to hit the PS button and quit game.

Checked the install size and it says it's over 9GB installed. Started the game and it asked if I want to install the game again. Decided maybe I will just install on the fly.

Clicked on GT Mode and it's all hung up again. Just sitting there. Going back to Wal Mart to exchange the PS3.

Have you done what I wrote about recovery ? It could be simple issue of HDD file corruption. At least try to do file restore then rebuild database. No need to delete the game data if you don't want to.

Ridox, I did the database rebuild as you suggested. Weird how a new PS3 with a full format on it needed to have the database rebuilt. Anyhow, I am doing everything everyone has said to do here.

Started the game back up after the database rebuild and it's asking me to install the game again. Giving it another try. If after an hour and a half and it's still stuck, I'm just going to return everything to Wal Mart. Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto 4, Avatar, Logitech G27, and the PS3. I don't feel I need to go through this much BS just to play a game.

Took everything back to wal mart. This is retarded. Two different brand new discs and the game just won't install. Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions. Guess I'm just not meant to play anymore Gran Turismo's. GT4 was awful btw.
