Friday Free Practice Session 1
Williams Dominate With Opening 1-2 Result
Just fifteen minutes before the session was due to get underway, McLaren driver Kimi Raikkonen presented Giancarlo Fisichella with his first ever winners trophy, the one he should have received in Brazil two weeks ago. Cristiano da Matta and Heinz-Harald Frentzen are the first to take to the Imola circuit for their first installation lap of the day. Several other drivers follow the duo out onto the track, including both Williams and both McLarens. Michael Schumacher roars onto the track in front of a very eager crowd while brother Ralf sets the opening time of the day, followed by McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen. Montoya slots in ahead of the McLaren as Michael records the quickest time in sector one, sector two and sector three to take top spot from his brother, by over 1.3 seconds. David Coulthard goes second but the Jaguar of Antonio Pizzonia soon takes the place away. Next lap around and the Brazilian rookie takes top spot from the Ferrari driver by .026. Last year's pole time here was a 1:21.091, set by Michael and Pizzonia's best is almost two and a half seconds of this. Mark Webber slots the second Jag into third with Cristiano da Matta now fifth. Rubens Barrichello is now on track along with Jos Verstappen. Barrichello goes third on his first lap but he isn't there long before Heinz-Harald Frentzen takes the spot for Sauber. Fernando Alonso makes his move and goes fifth. Twenty-five minutes in and Giancarlo Fisichella finally takes to the circuit for the first time this session and the Brazilian GP winner takes to the top of the leaderboard. Rubens takes the place away and records a 1:23.064 for Ferrari. Meanwhile, Antonio Pizzonia's session has come to a close after just 8 laps. Justin Wilson's Minardi has also stopped, the British rookie completing just four laps. ark Webber is on a flying lap and takes second behind Barrichello. The two Williams drivers haven't done a lot this session with Ralf in 11th after 14 laps and Montoya in 13th. However, Montoya now pus in the fastest first sector and takes top spot with the best final sector as well, 1.2 seconds ahead of Barrichello. Problems for Villeneuve in the first sector and the Canadian's session is over. Jenson Button is now up to second place while Renault's Fernando Alonso puts in the fastest second sector to claim third. Another flying lap for Montoya…the Colombian fastest in sector one and two to shave four and half tenths of his previous best. However, teammate Ralf Schumacher crosses the line seconds later to take top spot by seven hundredths of a second. Only minutes remain and David Coulthard goes third for McLaren but Webber soon takes the position. Alonso Button and Frentzen all improve. Sixth placed Jenson Button is the best placed Bridgestone runner with the top five drivers all on Michelin. Ralf keeps his place at the top of the leaderboard with teammate Juan Pablo Montoya close behind. Results
