Is this possible? He has no back up. The old PS3 is taken apart because it would not eject his game. So, he has a new PS3 and his old hard drive. Can the data be removed using a PC and then transferred to a USB Drive? And then to the new PS3? If so, what files do I need to look for.

The only way to get the files off the old PS3 is to have it repaired and the motherboard cannot be replaced. The files on the hard drive are encrypted to the PS3 it was formatted on and there is currently not a way to break this. Since the PS3 has been hacked, it may be possible soon, but as of now, the only way to retrieve data is to repair the original PS3.

Wow. What about putting the drive in another ps3? Will it boot up? Or does it have to be that specific PS3.

It has to be that specific PS3. If you attempt to put it in another PS3, it will try to format the drive as it doesn't recognize the encrypted file system from the other PS3.

If you put the drive on a new PS3, the new one will format it and make it its own.

dang. So he is out of luck then. He's not gonna wanna hear that. lol

If it was a YLOD failure, it can be repaired. There are a few places online that will reflow the motherboard (most common failure) for under $100.

No yellows. I think he said it flashes red. Then solid red. And then goes off.

It could still be a failure of the solder on the motherboard. It also could be a power supply issue. I'm assuming he has a "Fat" PS3 though. If I remember correctly, mine did something similar and I had it reflowed to fix it.

Not sure but I think that means it's a hard drive failure anyway... My Fat used to do that every now and then; as in it would turn on, run for a while then turn itself off with a red flashing light. If I left it for a while it would work again. I looked it up and I found out it could be hard drive issue, so I backed up important files then replaced the hard drive, and it never did it again (until it YLOD'd).

This is exactly what mine did and its on its way back to Sony now. Luckily for me I had backed up my saves.

As to your question I asked Sony if when I send my ps3 back if they could transfer the data for me on to my new ps3 (I even offered to pay extra) and they informed me that they will not do this.

Hints to your friend that helped me get some more saves backed up after this started if there is a way he can put his ps3 back together. I turned my ps3 off from the back and made sure it was cool. Then turn it back on. It would let me have a few minutes up before it crashed again. This should be enough time for your friend to back his saves up if he is quick about it.

Ok I will try that. He may send it to me. But, he's kinda sounding like he's not going to bother with it. We'll see. If anything I want his PS3 just to see if I can get it running. I do computer repair on the side, but haven't messed with a PS3 before.
