I was browsing through the DVDs in Xavvi (used to be Virgin) the other day and noticed this. I hadn't heard of the series, but as it had won awards, was made by people I'd heard of (Tom Hanks & Ron Howard) and as I like spacey things, and as it was only £10 (cheapest price I've since found online since was £18!), I decided to purchase it.

It's a dramatisation of the Apollo space program in 12 episodes and I've watched the first 3 episodes so far, and they've been excellent. It's extremely well made with great acting and excellent special effects. It also seems to be historically accurate and it's all fascinating stuff. I'd highly recommend it (even at the higher price)

I received this as a Christmas gift last year, and I finally got around to it about three months ago. I've always had a fascination with the space program; living in Florida naturally puts you close to it, so it was interesting to see how the pre-Shuttle era played out (since it was just before I was born)

If you're looking for much in the way of Tom Hanks, you'll be disappointed: He only speaks in the introductions of each episode. But compile all the episodes, and there's numerous great actors and actresses that make each chapter a bit more suspense and perspective on the Apollo/Gemini missions.

£10 sounds like a bargain.

Seemingly, he knows more about Jim Lovell than Jim Lovell does due to the research he put in for Apollo 13...

I read somewhere that when the actor who plays Lovell in this asked Lovell if he wore a certain ring (can't recall which one) when he was up in space, Hanks answered correctly.
