I have only spent a little time making setups in iRacing and I can't find much good information on figuring out how much fuel to put in a car before a race. I'm having some fun in the iRacingnew series in the solstice and MX-5 roadster.
How can I find a fuel level?
Are the MPG listed anywhere?
Do I really have to put a small tank of gas in the car and wait for it to run out then figure out the gas milage from the laps?

Guessing you have no clue about the black boxes.

Which means you also don't keep F3 open.

Facepalm.

Are you asking fuel level while in the car which can be found in fuel black box (F4 I think) which will give you how many gallons you have left.

Honestly that's about the only way I know how to gauge gas usage and I don't do MPG more like laps left or how many laps I can do. It all depends on a track too. I pretty much start any race with full tank and gauge how I'm doing to see if need fuel or not too.

If I'm serious enough about a particular race I'll run a 25-50% simulation run wich will give me a very good fuel figure for a race, for other races I'll just go by the Fuel Load black box estimation wich is close enough.
Also, if you haven't scroll trough them the black boxes have very very good real time race information specially the F3 box wich is the one I'll always have up along with the delta display.

OK thanks. I have only tired the F3 button.

I keep hearing about the "F3" box but I all it seems to show is the running order "relative". I must be missing something. In short 25 lap races I have never needed it.

It'll be more vital once you get into multy class racing.
You already have good awareness and pay attention to the mirrors, but for the ussual rookie it really is an important tool as they are prone to be slower, spin out more often and rejoin the track with no idea where the traffic is.

The F3 buttons is just that. It helps you know who is coming up from behind faster than your mirror will tell you along with exiting pits, etc. It's a good idea to use it to help know what's going on around. It seems like dumb thing at first but comes in handy more than you'd think.

OK, thanks. I can see how it can help when in a long race with prototypes but my mirrors have yet to fail me. I will try using it again. Might as well get use to it. Normally I find taking my eyes off the virtual "car" odd.

I find it helps me in just seeing who is round in general. I use it more for seeing if I'm being caught or catching the guy infront since I pretty much race ovals. Another feature it helps with is keeping tabs when your catching someone you know is an issue or vise versa. It gives you some time to prepare instead of them being on you and then trying to make a game plan. There are only 3 boxes I use mainly for most races, F3-F5 but it stays on F3 unless I'm making a pit stop adjustment.

You will learn to use it as I did because I used to in rookie classes or D with standings til I figured out winning won't happen all the time.

but my mirrors have yet to fail me.

They will fail you when a car is coming along at 140 MPH, you have a quick look in your mirrors and then pull out and ... BOOM. Always check your relative black box to see the time the car behind you is. That is the most accurate way to see how far someone is behind you.

if you have a secondary screen, download a program called iSpeed, it is a telemetry program that runs every time you join an iracing session.

Will do lap times, gear indicator, speed, delta times and......... fuel level and usage. gives a previous lap use and also a last 5 lap average use of fuel.

Very handy!

I run iSpeed off of a 7" USB monitor, most people miss the point of this program all together. Use it to find where you are losing time, compare any car on any track with the aliens and see where they brake, throttle etc.. Also great for fuel left in the tank as Eric said, tells you how many laps you have remaining for the fuel level in gallons or litres.
