Future: Assured job or risky though dreamjob?

Hey guys,

It took me alot of time to get even an idea what I wanted to become, and I'm quite stuck on this:

My dreamjob would be acting, everyone says that I'm real good at it, mainly because of the good english pronouciation I have. Many people often say: "One would think you're from America!"

I also think it's so much fun to do, everytime we're having a roleplay in the classroom, everyone says "Bleh!" while the expression on my face just becomes...heavenly or something, I can't explain it. I would easily like to act whole days!

But here lies the things what I'm so doubting about, how much chance do I even have to get in a drama school? I mean, the closest one is 200 km from home and it's not even sure I'm good enough to get into a drama school.

I could easily go and work on a desk whole days but I don't want to work my whole life behind a desk just so I can afford my bread.


Are there anyone of you guys here who have had these...feelings? Some tips would be very welcome 👍

You're english pronouciation can't be that good then! :p

Try and do both. Get a job to keep you comfortable and in your spare time see what you can get on the acting circuit.
 
Good advice, I am kinda doing that at the moment, although it's not acting, it's editing, but meh, same deal.
 
Many people regulate themselves to a job that is unexciting and unrelated to any of their interests. While it may pay the bills, eventually you are going to become miserable. I say try to follow your pursuits and see where it takes you. If you fail, then join the corporate war machine like everyone else.

Fortunately my office job is related to my dream job. It's close enough that I don't think I'll have a mid-life crisis and wonder if I've wasted it all.

If anything, always keep the dream alive. Even if you fail. Because lots of people have 'made it' after failing many times and being told that they sucked. I guess there's a fine line to it... living in denial vs. knowing your true potential. I want to be an accomplished musician and rock and roll star. Do I believe that I'll ever become one? No. But when I get settled down, it is entirely within reach for me to start a local band and just play weekends in bars.
 
There are no waiters in Hollywood - just actors waiting for the right part.

But, seriously, if you love it, try it. Act in high school plays and summer stock. Put in the time and learn the nuts and bolts of it; pay your dues. Just recognize that, like professional sports, the rich and famous ones are only the tip of the iceberg below that are increasingly less rich and less famous.

So by all means give it your best shot - just keep a backup plan in mind. That way if you can't make acting a career, you can at least do it as a hobby.

I'm now still on a regular school so I've got that certificate at least when acting doesn't work, what concearns me as well is my age. When I'm done with high school, I'm 20. I'm now 17, and I'm wondering in what kind of way my age will play along with this whole situation...
 
Vin Diesel's first uncredited role was in 1990 when he was 23 and his first credited role was when he was *gasp* 30. I don't think age will be a problem.

Was Vin a good example? Probably not, but the point remains the same.
 
Deffinatly go towards the acting i say. But like mentioned, keep a back-up plan in mind.

Why shouldn't you try out for the drama school??

I know 200Km is a loong way to travel. But in the long run, it could work out for the best..
 
Go after what you love to do and give it everything you've got. Study, learn, practice, work hard at it - that's the way to succeed.

If you don't do the above, you may feel you've made a big mistake with your life.
 
Yeah, don't want you to be regretting it for the rest of your life, do we now?
 
Go ahead and do it. Just know that hollywood is ALL ABOUT who you know. You have to network yourself immensely. You can always fall back on an assured job, but you'll always feel empty if you don't at least try for your dream.

What is the big deal about 200kM/120 miles? Are you going to be driving that every day? Then yes, it should be a consideration. If it is weekly/monthly, it shouldn't be an issue.

For the record, I'd rather have a successful career in a local theater group than a piss poor career in Hollywierd any day.
 
Exactly, about the distance. I ain't driving that every day :eek: I don't even drive. I'm staying on...what's the word?...Like these rooms the school owns for the pupils who come from far and have to overnight at school. Damn, forgot the word, help me here guys. Flemish: "Internaat", norwegian: "Hybel"...WTF does a translation matter :rolleyes:

Well if you stay at the school in there Dorm rooms, then i guess thats not so bad.

Really if i was you, i'd go for dream job.

Well "Hollywood" is more or less the figurative lingo for acting careers.
 
Okay, my sister is looking to get into acting and from this I can tell you a few facts.

It's going to be hard to get into a drama school unless you're a) extremely attractive, or b) have already worked e.g. adverts, extra etc.

You're best bet is to join a drama club/group that will get you into adverts or parts as an extra and work from there. There will be a fair it of cost involved and probably alot of traveling unless you live near a particularly large city.

This is what my cousin has done and she has been an extra in BBC series Teachers and Agent Cody Banks 2.

Currently my sister is studying drama and history (:odd: ) in university hoping to make her way into acting on a more technical side.
 
Now you bring that up, wouldn't I have a higher chance of succes if I'd study in America?

But you'd just have an equal chance in Norway. =/
Then maybe when your more experienced, you'll have a higher chance of success in america. Not that you wouldn't now, but there are so many people wanting to become the next big thing in america - competetive market - being in Norway to start would be easier.
 
Hmmm, good point.

I could maybe make my own little movies as a little warm- up so I k now if I actually can act...Isn't there a bloody actor in here?!

I think making your own little movies at home is good, read several monologue's - sad/happy/angry/over-the-top - and give it your all, as if it was the really thing. Then, see if you can act at all and then you can work on improving the areas that need improving. Once finished watching note down the areas of improvement, maybe take a monologue from a movie you have, then you can compare your intreprtation to theres, and see how you need to improve it.

Oh btw I'm a Performing Arts student. ;)
