You're crazy if you think

I can afford either of these.
Well in the future, I have hopes of building a race track. I really don't know much about the costs and what not, but I do think I have a pretty good track layout.

Please excuse the crappy photoshop, it's just to show the layout of the track.

I don't have any dimensions figured as of yet, but I know I'd put some banking in that top left corner.

Any comments to the layout?

I've had dreams of doing the same thing--but lack of funding tends to put a damper on them.

Nice track layout BTW. Here's my slight alterations on it that would make it even more interesting. :D

Ohhh I like that! Since that doesn't stray too far off whats there it could easily be just paved in and then cordoned off.

Have you ever thought of getting some sort of architect's degree and pitching the idea to someone with the funds? Looks like a nice layout.👍

Well since I'm not able to do that at the moment, it's all just a dream. I haven't pitched it anywhere but here, seeing as I just came up with that layout. It's been kinda dominant in my thoughts lately, so I thought I'd put it here.

With the crashing market here in florida the land probably wouldn't be too hard to come by.

I'd be tempted to say that'd actually make it less interesting. In both designs, there's a lack of very heavy braking areas.

As F1 (and other classes) will show, it's these heavy braking areas where overtaking (and 'action') happens. I'd suggest putting in a couple of long straight sections with tight corners at the end. And switchbacks are good, because if a driver can hang on the outside, they have the inside for the next corner.

The tracks posted above give me the impression they'd be very hard to pass on.

Here is a thread about costs:
http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3764584

Pavement alone is near a million, plus land, buildings, utilities, grandstands, infield, gravel traps, grass, etc. I would say 3-5 million at the least not including insurance and other unforeseen mishaps.

**The Bahrain International Circuit cost $150 million to build if that gives you any idea. I guess I was waaaayyyyy off the mark.

That's Bahrain, though. There's tons of little tracks that probably priced around $3-5 million.

Build it in Florida. Legally, this has got to be one of the best states for enthusiasts, but we have awful track support.

Let me give you another idea of funding issues. Quensland Raceway is geting a major extension, it will finally be a really interesting track. Unfortunately they can't fund it outright so they're funding it as they go. Know how long it will take them? Over 10yrs, just to do an extension. Alternatively, get Jeremy Clarkson on the job and have it done in a month
Nice layout. I kind of like GT90210's layout more, for reasons ferrari_chris mentioned. I have but one suggestion to the original to make it just that little more interesting. The top left corner (I presume the 1st corner?) could be made sharper. Extend the straight just 10-15m longer, and make the top left corner come back into line with the top horizontal shape. Does that make sense? Try and photoshop it so you know what I mean. There will be an ever so slight left bend after the top left corner like that, but no one need brake for it. I think a track of that layout would be around 4-4.5km long.

If you compressed down the top half abit to give less of an infield you could have a devilish little go kart track there.

Like I said pavement is very expensive whether you go concrete or asphalt and the upkeep on it would be quite extensive as well. Land is another huge cost and you have to find a huge chunk of it away from homes due to noise and pollution issues. You are probably looking at 3 million in just those two things.

This is not even considering the yearly insurance premiums which would be through the roof, as well as utilities, clean up, and staff.

Unless you are an eccentric billionaire or know one building a decent track isn't really possible. Plans for one come through my area every once in a while but they are shut down quite quickly because while we might like motorsports none of us want to live by it.

Well to start with I'd definately just have the track, no buildings or anything, just kinda close to a gas station.

Would Concrete or Asphalt work better for the paving? I was thinkin' asphalt

That all may be true, but I don't know why you brought in Bahrain. Bahrain is a major GP circuit which means the track is going to be designed in a specific way.

If Mustang ever thinks of possibly altering or removing small parts of his creation, he may be able to have one built. MSR was only $6 million in Cresson, and $7.2 million in Houston.

ONLY $6,000,000...

Maybe I'll just make it a rally track, then all I need is the land, a dirt compressor machine thingy and a few walls.

Hehe another dream melded together.

BRING IN THE TROPHY TRUCKS!

Who will use your track without a garage? You need some sort of buildings on the property. Granted you don't need huge ones but you still need building. Just write it off as a dream and go on down the road.

It's a racetrack is it not? If you want to build a track that means anything you are going to expect to pay Bahrain prices.

Infieon Cost $70million to build
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infineon_Raceway

Laguna Seca cost $1.5 million in 1957 meaning with inflation it would be about $12 million in today's funds.

Actually, if you want to build a track in America that means anything, you'd better make damn sure that Nascar can race it too.

So basically a large, pointless oval track. But I guess they do attempt to race at Infieon, which was $70 million to build. I don't think people understand how fast money adds up with this. The land alone would be staggering.

I know there need to be some sort of buildings, but in the beginning with it being just me and maybe a friend around there, it won't matter too much.

Put up buildings after the money allows, but the track is definately the most important thing.

Building a track for you and your friends to race on? No way that's going to work with the money it'll cost.

One can probably build a low speed, 1/4-1/2 mile track for relatively cheap (think GT4's Beginner Course or Motor Sports Land), not counting the cost of the land. Even then, if it's only a couple of acres you need out in the middle of nowhere, that shouldn't be bank-breaking either.

Welcome to my train of thought.

And the track would not just be for me and friends. Just in the beggining before word could get out that's all who would be there
