I've hit some problems with my PC, firstly it's got an E8400 CPU, 9600GT GPU, 2gB DDR2 RAM, Gigabyte GA EP35 DS3L Mobo, TV Tuner Card, 2 HDDs, DVD drive, Win XP SP3, and a stock case with a 400~W PSU. It's around 2 and a half years old now, but it's running fine.

The problem is; when the G25 is plugged in to the PC, randomly the G25 will get 'cut off' (as in turning off) whenever it feels like it. It used to happen every couple of days or so, so it wasn't really a big deal, but now it happens after about 15 mins of plugging in. I now can't use the G25 for long or it will cut off, always. This is one variation of the large problems that lie ahead. For convenience, it's probably better to draw a small diagram of what happens. It's just a *tad* (I'm pushing it there) hard to understand but..

By other USB devices, I mean for instance a USB microphone.

So far I've tried testing my G25 on another PC (without drivers however), and my PS3 and the problem doesn't occur. I can safely say it's *something* to do with my PC's end. The possibilities are: my USB ports are ruined (highly unlikely, as the rear ports have the same problem), something to do with my mobo has gone wrong, or my PSU is on it's way out (it's a case standard one, so it's nothing special).

When I say I 'plug in and the PC shuts down', I mean just touching the G25 USB cable with the port makes the PC cut off. As long as the metal touches, it will cut off.

I hope someone can at least find out the source of the problem, as if it is my mobo, I rather go for a new PC as I was going to upgrade at the end of this year anyway.

Thanks for reading.

Due to the randomness of it powering down it seems like a PSU issue to me, also if your getting power cut off's just by jiggling cables (touching metal) then its either on its way out or there is a loose connection somewhere. If this only happens with the G25's USB and not other USB devices it might be that its power requirements are particularly high.

I would open up the case unplug and replug in all the connections from the PSU. Also check the capacitors on the mobo, see that they are not blistering or expanded in an unusual way. It could also be that there is an earthing problem somewhere which is tripping the safety in the PSU.

I had a similar problem where just shaking or plugging in a cable would cause the computer to power off like a power cut then come back on a second later, sometimes it would repeat this in a loop. I found in the end that it was loose cables from the PSU.

The other reason could be something to do with the power settings in windows with relation to USB connections. Go into Control Panel and have a look around Power Settings to test different settings. I cannot remember off the top of my head but there are some settings which might be putting the USB ports to sleep after a certain time or under certain conditions.

If that keyboard uses special drivers it might be that something is conflicting or maybe the process crashes causing it to power down but thats unlikely.

Hope that helps somewhat,

Robin.

I'll check the PSU and Mobo tomorrow when I get the chance; it doesn't help that this happened just at the week I start exams.

Cheers Robin. 👍

Did you update to the latest bios for your mb?
And is your cpu overclocked? If so, try the g25 running at stock clocks. Maybe the oc is a bit unstable?

I haven't actually modded the stock PC at all, everything is still at original specs, and the mobo even temporarily underclocks the CPU when I'm not using it. Yesterday I bought a 4-port USB connector thing, and plugged it in the front ports, then plugged the G25 into that. Now it works fine, but the problem is just being overlooked, and we still can't figure out why that happens.

Make sure you don't have your USB Hubs going into a power save mode, inadvertently powering down that device.

Go into the control panel and turn off this feature in your USB HUB's. It might help.
