This may seem like a total noob question:

I wish to simulate the driving experience...so how does one know exactly if the car should use paddles, H-gated or sequential?

It's only obvious to me to use paddles if it's a race car, or if it's got 7 gears, or only in premium models you can see the hands tapping the paddles behind the wheels rather than reaching down for the shifter.

Everything else I use H-gated w/ clutch...how do I know which car would use the DSG/sequential?

I'd probably just guess to be honest, or if you're that bothered, research it. It's probably safe to use the year the car was made as a guide, too, because wheel mounted paddles are fairly new, whereas sequentials aren't; so, for example, in the Escort Rally Car I'd use the sequential.

Read the cars info, or if it is a premium check replay and some of the car has a back seat camera which lets you see the stick in action.
Last resort: Google is your friend :)
Hope that helps

m3 csl is paddle shift in reality, so its what I do in game...

generally the more modern cars are paddle shift, and because they are modern chances are they are premium. From observations on some race cars it seems the use sequential shifting (the up down method on the g25)

hope that helps somewhat in terms of realism

thanks..i didn't know this info would be found car description...and no i didnt want to just open google everytime i wanna try a new car :)
