G25 vs DFP...worth the 3x price difference?

Hey guys, I finally found a forum that talks about racing wheels after a long search on Google...well hopefully this is the right place! :)

I am interested in a racing wheel, but I have never used one before. I can only go by what people discuss in forums. I have no idea what they feel like or what they are 'supposed' to feel like. The G25 is currently 3x the price of the Driving Force Pro. Is it worth the extra $150? I can buy the DFP new for $85 or the G25 for $245. Anyone here use both and can compare the quality? Obviously the G25 must feel better, but by how much?

Also, I noticed in some YouTube videos that the G25 wheel has its center axis slightly off center so that the wheel appears to wobble when it spins. Is this how the G25 wheel is designed? Or was this a defect? Ideally, I would like the wheel to rotate uniformly.

the wheel being off center isn't a defect. it was designed like that. i don't know why, but i'm sure someone else on here will tell you why. i have the g25 and can attest to it's greatness. the only thing i can compare it to is the xbox wireless wheel. it is much better than it, i would say 3x better. But until using the g25 i thought the 360 wheel was great. anyway, from what i have heard on here is that pretty much all of logitechs wheel are good. the big thing with the g25 is the addition of the clutch and six speed shifter. those two things alone add much to the gaming experience. either wheel would be a good choice and make all your racing games better than you would imagine a wheel would.

Check out these threads for more in-depth info on each wheel and what people have to say about both:

Also, it mostly depends on 2 factors:
Do you have the money to pay for a G25? If you do and that amount isn't a really big issue, I'd strongly suggest the G25.
Are you an avid gamer or just a 'I play sometimes' kind of gamer? If you're the latter, I'd suggest the DFP.

Of course, you can be a 'play once a year' kind of gamer and still want to shell out the extra money for the G25, but it would be a waste if you ask me.

EDIT: You can get a G25 for at least $229,99, from this place.

Thanks for the comments so far. The off center axis is a bit of a turn off. Do any real wheels do that? I would think it would be noticeable when the wheel spins. I also don't like that plastic clicking noise the shifter makes in the videos. But I would bite if it was offered under $200. Thanks Beerz for the links. Amazon currently has the lowest price as far as I can see (Shipping Included).

The DFGT appears to be scheduled for release on April 30th, correct? And I'm guessing it will cost near the MSRP for a while. Right now, I am leaning towards the DFP, even though it was released some time ago. The Fanatec wheel sure looks great. Too bad the pedals and shifter don't match its quality. Especially for $350. The beta tester $175 price is more reasonable.

The clicking on the vids is always a lot higher than reality, bear that in mind. It has to do with the recording if the vids, can't even compare to actually hearing it.

And as far as the G25 'off-center', I find it to be un-noticeable while using it, at least unplugged. (waiting for my PS3). I spin the wheel from full lock to full lock and only notice it if I compare the highest point of the wheel to an object beyond it, in which case as the wheel spins, you see the top-most part go up and down slightly. But when actually using the wheel, you cannot notice it, as it's not something you 'feel', only see.

But if you're going with the DFP, it's a good deal with its price so low. The DFP isn't bad at all, it's a pretty good wheel. The G25 is just better (for more money, of course)

The G25 is much nicer to use than the DFP because of the (somewhat larger) leather-wrapped wheel & the really solid, heavy steel pedals vs the rather unpleasant rubber & plastic pedals of the DFP (also smoother & quieter rotation).

On top of that there is the clutch & H-shifter (where they can actually be used).

As beerz says: if you're only a casual sim racer, the DFP is fine. If you put a lot of time into sim racing, it's definitely worth the extra investment.

I don't have any "off-axis" issues with my G25. Incidentally, I like using the wheel with headphones as it makes all the grinding, thumping, clicking etc. noises inaudible (at least to me!).

Hard to say... I used to love the G25 but then I tried a better wheel and the G25 just feels so wrong after that :(. funny thing is that I did went from a DFP to a G25 and thought it was a great improvement force feedback and all... However now I think I am more compatible with the old DFP in term of force feedback... The G25 force feedback has absolutely no resistance in the center and the grip doesn´t help the feel either... It simply doesn´t feel like any car I have ever driven. But if it´s being realistic is not important for you I don´t think this will bother you much. DFPs grip is better though.

However still the G25 pedals is what sets it apart from the DFP really... If you have a cockpit stable enough and nixim mod them you can see it like you get a set of pedals equal to 300$ standalone pedals minus some adjustability of course. I have had Frex pedals before and actually these feel more realistic now on the brake. I didn´t have the hydro or vibe brake kit on the Frexes earlier though.

Also running with an H-shifter is great fun. To bad the feel is not good at all on the G25 and the sequential just don´t work for me so it´s a bit of a hit and miss. For console usage especially you may like the more buttons available on the wheel as well instead of grasping for the shifter...

Also I preferr the paddles over the button on the DFP.. It works however with time they seem to develope tendencies to double shift...

But well bang for the buck I must say there is still the DFP but then it may not be cheaper in the long run since you may still be tempted to get a G25 or Fanatec 911 Turbo or other wheels :)

Thanks for the advice guys. Oqvist, when you talk about grip, you mean the actual wheel (leather vs rubber), correct? I am only a casual gamer and haven't really tried much racing, so I can't justify the cost of something like the G25. Now, if Logitech releases a new model with improved force feedback motors and shifter, I might reconsider.

Not so much that as for the shape of the wheel... The grip on the G25 is too thin so you just never get a good grip on it Optimized for kid hands I suppose... So the DFP feels better despite being smaller and rubber instead of leather because of that.

I love the wheel Grip. It's perfect. It feels a bit like a race car wheel, for me at least. If you find grip a bit small, wear gloves like these.
