G27 guys, tell me about the learning curve / your experiences

Just picked up a G27 and have it all mounted up cockpit style. This is my first wheel, and I'm finding the learning curve a bit steep. I've been playing GT since the 2nd game, and was very good with a controller, but I am having a lot of trouble judging/correcting a slide with the wheel, and they often get out of hand resulting in a frustrating spin. I prefer cockpit view, and find it a bit weird how the steering wheel on the screen will stop turning at a point before the wheels on the car do.

So a simple question really. How long did it take for you to adjust to this wheel?
 
I got my wheel all set up on friday last week, same as in your case this is my first wheel.
I was very good with a sixaxis controller (Platinum/golded Vettel with it) and at first I couldn't even steer right.

I started off with FF cars, proceeded with 4WD, then FR and now I'm in the process of mastering MR cars. Just don't jump straght in a 300+ hp car because you won't do any good.
As for the spinning out and things - well, I have the same problem, I just can't recover. The answer is just don't put yourself in those situations - smooth is key, if you start losing the rear end just let go off the throttle, point the wheel straight and brake if necessary. Have in mind that there are some (well, most of) slides you can't recover from, just go smooth and don't push too hard.
I found that turning off HUD helps learning with the wheel.

Just practice and have fun.
 
yeah I hear ya. I just love FR's, but I noticed that stock-ish FF's are pretty easy to be smooth with. I'll try some AWD's next and see if I can slowly work in some oversteer.
 
it took me about 10 hours of gameplay to get used to my first wheel, a DFGT on GT5. the main thing i can suggest is going through (maybe start another account) and just practice practice practice in the license tests.

have fun in the fgt championships though....:sick:
 
It's hard to say, depends on how many times you spend to practice .
You know, wheel control is using your hands & feet to work together,
need to train up your body muscles to coordinate in whole action set,
just like a baby learning how to walking.
So ,you just can be patience ,
drive it round by round then waiting the day it become a reflex action. :)

Drifting is understeering though.
I do recommend an Subaru Impreza as a 4WD car to learn using the wheel in. It's an easy car to drive and drift. If you feel there is too much understeer then set the Central Diff to (30 front - 70 back) on the Impreza.

Also I have to note that even I had to get used to a wheel after not having used one for about half a year. Then I recently went from a G25 to a T500 RS and had to learn it all over again, since the wheel diameter was bigger and the pedals have a very different feel to them.
After a weekend I could handle it again like before though. So just keep at it and when you get frustrated/angry for not being able to achieve the right results, take a break and grab a coffee (or something else) for 5 or 10 minutes and try again.
 
Great wheel, mine broke within 3 weeks, can't replace it as I bought it in the States and the warranty isn't covered in the U.K :grumpy:

Thanks for the input guys, glad to know I'm not the only one who needs to get calibrated to the wheel. I just hope I can get to the point where I can drift FR cars decent. I love to race, don't get me wrong, but drifting is nice to break up the times when racing gets stale.
 
Oh..... Drifting will take a good 2-3 weeks to learn to drift efficiently. But racing took me only about a week.

if you went from ds3 to g27 it will take a little more than a week. simply because there's so much going on when using the g27 full setup,( clutch and h shifter) unless of course your just using the paddles...

if you went from dfgt then i would say about a week just to get used to it..

but trust me stay with it don't get discouraged and you will be beating your ds3 lap times in no time

just because you know how to drive a clutch in real life. doesn't mean you know how to on gt5.. you may know the concept, but chances are you don't race for a living, it takes some serious precision to use the clutch and h shifter in gt5.. but its the most rewarding experience.

i always have a kool aid smile when i win at nurburgring, cause i know i beat someone using the h-shifter and clutch while they probably had a ds3. thats when you know you have some skills..

Drifting killed my 6 month old DFGT... Well, I don't know if it was the drifting, but I was doing a drift trial when the wheel suddenly lost all force feedback, and within a minute or so the light in the horn button went off and the wheel (just the wheel, none of the buttons or pedals were affected) just stopped working.

call Logitech.. they have great customer service.. and they stand behind there products.. got my replacement in less than a month after mine went kaput..

My wheel was still under the 1 year warranty, so it was replaced free of charge. The thing that gets me is that they WILL NOT give you another year of warranty on a new wheel that they send you if yours is replaced. I even asked if I could get some sort of "store credit" towards a G27, and they said no...

Now when it comes to actual computer equipment, like mice or keyboards, they love to replace/update/upgrade even after the warranty is up.

What's up with that?
 
When I jumped from a DFGT to a G27 i was a better driver very fast. We are talking about 1 or 2 days later I was a few seconds lower on many of my records.
