hey all, sorry if this has already been addressed elsewhere

i'm new to all the logi g27 mods, but i really want to have a handbrake mod now that gt6 is out. am i right in thinking i can either buy something like the handb+ from frex, or make up my own with any old handbrake? i've heard some are only compatible with PC, so i definitely need something that would work with ps3.

can anyone help me regarding what exactly to buy? links or full names of things would be appreciated as im not familiar with mod terms. i've got a set up using an old Alfa Romeo seat etc so i figured i could get a matching handbrake from a wreckers, but if theres something easier then that's preferable.

many thanks!

Eve

As far as I know, you've got two options; use the G27 itself or use a PS3-compatible controller. The former is probably the most straight forward as you only need to solder one button to the G27's shifter (which, unfortunately, will void your warranty unless you get a spare shifter from Ebay to mod, which is probably the best idea).

The latter is a little more involved but it does mean that you can add a PS button to your racing cockpit (you mentioned your Alfa seat so I assume you've got something permanent or semi-permanent set up?) so you don't need to have a controller to turn on the PS3 and turn it off. Soldering to a Dualshock 3 is pretty difficult but it can be done if you have a steady hand, a soldering iron with a fine tip, some 30AWG Kynar wrapping wire (I find that works best but I have done it with normal wire, it was much more difficult though) and a scalpel. And lots of patience. It does produce the best result though and is probably the cheapest option assuming you have the tools beforehand; broken Dualshock 3s or even Sixaxis controllers are easy to find, you might even have one already. This method will only be compatible with GT5 and 6, though, as no other racing games that support a G27 on PS3 allow you to use a controller at the same time.

Stand-alone handbrake devices won't work unless they specifically say they work with the PS3, but there aren't any that do to my knowledge.

As for how you'd actually go about making this mod, you need to get a handbrake to work on first so you know what you're dealing with. Try and get one with a switch already attached and make sure the switch isn't damaged (i.e. it needs to have the metal terminals for you to connect wires to), but if you can't find one with an undamaged switch it's probably better to get one without a switch at all then work out how to mount one on there yourself. Then you just need to research your options, choose the one you'd prefer to do then come back and ask us for help!

inside there is a microswitch in parallel with one button inside the shifter, so yes there is a soldering involved.

hey guys, thanks very much for your help.

just wondering, if i take your first option re g27 itself, does it need to be the g27 shifter or could i get away with a g25? would that involve soldering the handbrake switch to the O button on the shifter? i believe my warranty has run out, so thats not such an issue, but i'd be worried about ruining the g27 i use if i did something wrong. that said, there's an engineer in the family so i'm sure i could bribe them to do the soldering.

also wondering, would either option be preferable if i wanted to do a sequential shifter mod at a later date?

Again that will depend on what platform you are planning to play with.
If you want ps3 compatibility, then you are stuck with available buttons in G27.

Long term side effect might be some short circuit on the soldering /jumper cables that will cause weird behaviour of the entire wheel. But nothing to worry, so far G27 circuitry is strong enough, when it happen you just need to remove /rewire shorted ones and will be back to normal.

Hope it helps

You can use one of these ps3 controllers, really any wired ps3 controller for ps3/pc and you wont void your warranty.

I have one of these snakebyte controllers and use it for an e-brake. My dad has a g27 and uses one for an e-brake and sequential shifter. works perfect in both gt5/6 and pc sims. The boards are very easy to solder to so you can use it for a ps3/pc button box, ebrake, and or shifter project if you wanted. Of course this would only work for gt5/6 on ps3 as it's the only game/'s I know of that lets you have more than one controller working for you.

As you can see I dont even need to solder anything on my setup for the e-brake I just use an elastic band to pull the stick. Works as a full analog e brake.

diptob, it would be for ps3. the only racing game i really play is gt5/6 so its cool if it just works with that. thanks for the info on circuitry :) makes me feel a bit less paranoid!

i'm having trouble finding a g27 shifter that isn't in a package, so I might just get a wired controller and experiment. all good if it only works with gran turismo, as thats pretty much all i play racing wise. i might try to rig up some kind of box to put it all in as i'll knock it otherwise i suspect

thanks everyone!
