G27 users: do you use the clutch/shifter?

I assume most of you do, but I'm just curious because the force feedback makes me worry how horrible my lap times would be if I bought this wheel and tried to one-hand it while shifting. Did your lap times go down? Do you mainly use paddles? I've gotten so used to them that I don't know if I'd be any good with the clutch.

Anyone want to enlighten me on how they shift? Do you downshift through every gear and let it wind down/engine brake? Do you go to the specific gear you need when shifting down? etc.

I find that i am just as quick with a clutch and shifter than i am with the paddles so i only use the clutch and shifter on car that use that which i think makes it more fun.
It is worth buying a g27 because you get the change to learn heel toe and other techques. and if you buy a g27 you will start to get it to pc sims (if you havn't already)
Also watch so inside simracing eps on youtube (they will point you in the rigth direction)
 
i may not have my g27 set up right, but you cant speed shift it at all, cluch has to be all the way in, and has to be in gear before you let off the clutch. nothing like driving a real car in my opinion.
 
I bugh my g27 wheel yesterday. So I think it's difficult to just get around the easiest track's. But after playing GT over ten years whit DS, the wheel and the pedals are enough for me to handle now. The clutch and shifter have to wait.

you get use to it pretty quickly and it just doesn't bother me any more and it also help you to learn to shift quicker.
 
Also if you get a g27 or have one get a nixim brake mob for more brake feel
 
I have a G25 but basically the same thing, I used to switch from paddles to clutch/gear every now and then. But I nowadays I use clutch and shifter only, I've improved a lot with it. I nearly always downshift through each gear, except when I go flying into a corner to fast and cannot afford to lose braking power by downshifting.

Sometimes I can't brake as hard when downshifting due to my current setup. Since I come off the brakes a bit when blipping the throttle.

I don't like using the paddles, but of course it's easier to drive with them. If you use clutch, you will get used to it soon.

And one thing I like about the clutch in GT5, is it's ability to tackle turbo lag. My fully tuned 500 classic speeds up much, much quicker, if I ride the clutch until the turbo spools up properly. On the F40 a clutch kick, will usually get it going if you drop out of the power band, in first and second gear.

On GT5 the clutch only has a little biting point, but it's easy to find after you've done it a few times. Obviously in real life you don't want to ride the clutch since you'll burn it out.
 
Cool stuff. I really want this wheel the only drawback seems to be the price. I also like that you can get in Euro cars and switch the side of the shifter. Do you guys do this? Added realism=my nerd factor exploding...
 
The G27 takes some time to get use to. I used the clutch and shifter from day one but I've also never owned an auto trans real car so it feels normal to me. I think the shifting issue is actually with the gas pedal in my experience. You can push the clutch half way and still shift but oddly, it won't let you into the next gear without coming all the off the gas.
 
For most races, I use the clutch/shift all the time. For cars that naturally don't have a shifter such as f1 cars and some rally cars, I'll use the paddle shifters.

However, if I'm doing license tests or races that require the fastest time possible, I'll use the paddles as I find myself being a lot more consistent with them and maybe a tiny bit faster. Because of this game, I've found my heal/toe shifting to improve surprisingly. I do it consistently in my actual rx8.
 
I can't get use to H-shifter + clutch on GT5, I keep missing downshifts unless I really paid attention and slow down my movement, the problem is if I moved the stick before the clutch is fully compressed I miss the shift, and I couldn't just dip the clutch to put it in gear, I have to move the stick back to neutral and basically do the whole movement again.
I love using the clutch on LFS and Rfactor etc but on GT5 I have a very hard time with it.
 
See I think I also have no grasp of racing v. real life shifting. IRL I used to just do right foot brake/acc. and left foot clutch only. I didn't often engine brake through each gear because i would rather buy brake pads than clutches.

I also think racing braking is w/left foot which is probably what you guys are talking about heel/toe between clutch and brake? Sounds like it'd be awkward for me for a while :)
 
Before I got my G27 I had never driven in manual car in real life. So I pretty had to learn on it. I realize the clutch isn't totally realistic I do understand how much you can slip the clutch. It took me about a day playing nonstop to get used to it. I use it in most a-spec races if the car is a stick shift in real life. On license tests and online I use the paddles. Although I am not a big fan on them. They are too large and sharp.

im an old school drag racer, i use the clutch to launch, from there, the clutch might get breathed on between shifts, but for the most part its clutchless...lol
 
i just got my g27 in today. I have already figured out that the stupid fast cars, IE lm cars bugatti etc. I cant use the clutch, but the g27 will let you "float" the gears, you dont have match revs but you can pop in and out of gears at will with the h shifter, without using the clutch. If i use the clutch i end up not being able to slow down for turns fast enough or end up popping the clutch and spinning out as i enter the turn. So fast cars ill float the gears or use the paddels. On slower cars or when im drifting ill use the clutch.
That i occasional hit the clutch instead of the brake... which is deadly
 
I used the paddles any time I'm racing other people with paddles. Driving with the clutch/shifter just isn't as fast, period.

I love using the H-Pattern though, and racing against other people who are also using the clutch is an absolute blast.

I can also say that the G27 with clutch taught me how to Heel-Toe downshift. I went to Skip Barber racing school a few weeks ago at Laguna Seca, and while everyone else was learning heel-toe from scratch, I nailed it perfectly the very first time trying it on the real car than to GT5 and my G27.
 
I use the paddles myself in GT5, peoples dissatisfaction with the gt5 clutch maybe me bypass it for this game. Also if you looking for a proper brake mod check out the AP Electrix Loadcell much better than any of the spring based ones.
 
I only use the paddle shifters, except when company is over. People always want to use the shifter, and then give up in about five minutes when they realize PD didn't make the whole action forgiving enough. It may be easy to make shifts with the clutch 100% engaged in real-life, but it's not easy in a video game and PD should have made note of this like other game developers have.

When Im using fast cars I normaly use the paddle shifter because it looks and feels realistic but when drifting I use the clutch and shifter its a must for me
 
I never use mine... the way the clutch is implemented in GT5 is rubbish.

I understand why people would use it for having a bit of fun, but not for racing/TTing...

You can't shift as fast with the clutch as with the paddles anymore (in the vast majority of cars), and left foot braking becomes tricky with a 3 pedal set up, which loses you more time.
