My Dad had to go up to Cambridge yesterday to a company to look at a new technique. What he went to look at was something which could cut sets of teeth on a crankshaft gear because x company wanted 3 sets of teeth on one piece of metal, which the machine at his work couldn't do because the cutting bit would have to go through one of the flanges of the 2 sets of teeth. Anyway he went up to this company and he was telling me that he thought they were an incredible company.

Now they obviously were trying to show off a bit so they showed him a device which does something to Galium Arsenide (I presume split it) so that it can be applied to wallpaper. You could then place a low voltage battery and the whole of the wallpaper would light up. Dad was quite unsure of how this works (not really his area of expertise), he also had trouble explaining it, thus my poor explanation.

I was wondering if someone could maybe explain to me how it works, I hope the details aren't too vague.

I cannot explain the fundamentals, but Gallium Arsenide is used in LEDs and luminates as a semiconductor, thus explaining why it lit up when a low voltage battery was touched to it.
