Hi, I recently started my third season on F1 2011 for Mclaren. In the first 2 seasons I was driving for Marussia and Torro Rosso so I only rarely made it into the top 10 in qualifying and this bug wasn't an issue.

The bug is that the AI drivers in the top 10 always seem to stay out too long for their tyres and every race about 5 or 6 of them retire from punctures just before the end of the first stint.

The bug happens when I start a race where I qualified in the top 10 (it seems more prominent if I qualify in the front 2 rows). Most of the first stint will be great, sometimes I even find myself in cool battles. I am quite harsh on tyres so I usually have to pit 1-2 laps before the AI anyway, but they seem to stay out for ages on their first set of soft tyres. Then, instead of all the AI pitting and coming back out around me to continue the fight, all of the front runners get punctures and retire 1 by 1.

For testing purposes, I purposefully didn't make it into the top 10 for the next race. Everything was fine. I pitted for new tyres at around the same time as all the AI and no cars got punctures. I think what's happening is that the AI in the top 10 are forced to run on the tyres they used for Q3, which is realistic enough, but they don't adapt their pitstop strategy to account for the fact that their tyres already have about 2 laps worth of wear. Why it only happens when I'm in the top 10 I'm not really sure, probably because the positions are then randomly decided and they start the race with fresh tyres.

TL;DR

The top 10 AI drivers stay out too long and all seem to retire from punctures just before the end of their first stint

I haven`t really noticed the issue your having. I use MR S`s setups but modified to work somewhat on the Williams. MR S`s setups are known to be hard on tyres.

During the race i`m always called in 2 laps earlier than compared to the AI in the first stint (and the whole race it seems). I usually do one extra lap after noticing the AI would pit 1-2 laps after i pitted. I would even stay out on track longer but the engineer is a pain when in your ear and i don`t want run of tyres so i`d pit.

The AI would wait until i had pitted first then they would pit (might just be a coincendence though and enough for me to notice) but they rarely if ever retired from a puncture.

Depends what track you're on. Monaco and Singapore are the worst because of the wheelspin out of the tight corners, the AI kill their rear tyres very quickly.

Most of the time at monaco I run the lean fuel map, and have specific up-shift points, so my rear tyres last a long time.

I know ways I could preserve my tyres, but I'm always aggresive so I just sometimes have to adapt my strategy.

I play the AI on legend difficulty, maybe that's the only time it happens. And like I said, it only seems to happen if I start in the top 10 and is more pronounced when I start close to the front.
