I'm not sure that it's me, but I think the quality of games lately has fell off the deep end. It seems that everytime I go to get a new game, nothing looks good at all. Yes there are a ton of titles that are out at the moment, but games havent been grabbing my attention lately. I'm looking forward to Ace Combat Assault Horizon, Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3 (cringe....I know I know), and Uncharted 3, but alot of the FPS/RPG/Racers that are out just seem bland. Maybe I need to lighten up a bit.

Sidenote:
There's a shop out here that sells old systems/games...etc. I'm kicking around the idea of picking up a super nintendo and buying up all the classics that I grew up with.

I'll have to give that one a look. I just got "Sniper: Ghost Warrior" a couple of days ago. The concept is awesome. I think if it had some Activision flare to it, it'd be an easy 8 or 9 out of 10.

It's all the FPS 'bankers' that are ruining the rest of the games, because every studio seems to want a COD-killer rather than invest in something different and make it good enough to sell on its own merits.

You've only just noticed?

Memories of the PS2 days still reside in me whereas I've already forgotten about some games I have on my ps3.

Let me see - now it's all down to personal taste but I seem to have too many games and not enough time available to explore them all in (I play about five to six hours a day) so I think there are plenty of fun ones out there still.

Titles from this year:
Bulletstorm
Infamous 2
Killzone 3
DiRT 3
Fear 3
Motorstorm Apocalypse
Portal 2

Ones I haven't got yet but they seem very worthy:
Battlefield 3
Alice: Madness Returns
Dead Island
Driver San Francisco
Uncharted 3
WRC 2 (2011)
Tomb Raider

Like I say, not everyone is likely to agree with all of the above - but they are/promise to be good games. Then of course there's all the older ones too :)

I guess it's no different to the movie industry really. As time goes on, originality becomes scarcer which I think plays a big part in how you perceive your experiences. Most memorable games do things a little (or a lot) different to others. I have memories or playing really fantastic games when I was younger such as the original Warcraft, Simcity, DOTT, Doom, CS, GT etc, well the list is pretty long. Anyway most of these games where either pioneers or the pinnacle of their genre. A lot of these proved so successful that it's only natural that other will copy and make their own versions. What we end up with are a lot of similar games vying for our attention and only a handful of them are good each year. Out of the good ones released, even less will be truly something amazing and memorable or in the extremely rare circumstance entirely original. It's not all doom and gloom however, there are gems out there. Witcher was mentioned. Don't forget Skyrim will be here soon along with Batman and Deus Ex.

Also go back and play old games. They are an absolute bargain now on ebay. I've set up an old pc with DOS and Win95 at home to play some classics. I have a lovely collection of older games most in good condition with the original big box (alot of the ones I listed earlier). Being a Star Wars fan I play X Wing and Tie Fighter series a fair bit even to this day. Sure the graphics are dated (quite severely in some circumstances) compared with today's standards, but the gameplay is fantastic.

I think there is a bit of a resurgence of interest in older games and consoles, in Australia for example, a new game store chain called Gametraders has been popping up everywhere over the past year or so. they seem to specialise in old consoles and their games. Seen some gret stuff in there. Have my eye on a N64 and Goldeneye probably for my next purchase.

One thing I'll never understand is why people who play video games act like this is something that's never happened before? Video games are the same as movies, television, books, etc. It's all "entertainment", and it tends to be cyclical. You're going to go through a period where there's not going to be a whole lot that appeals to you. Then there will be times when there's so many great games that are being released, you won't be able to keep up with them. Also I think one of the problems today is that for many, video games are their ONLY hobby. So they get burned out much easier on them.

There's no shame in taking a break once in a while. I go for weeks sometimes without turning on my PS3. It will be there when you get back. Besides, it's summer! Get out and enjoy the good weather.

Fair points. However I take issue with your suggestion to enjoy the "good weather." Where I'm at the forecast is 99-102 F and 40-ish% humidity (so like a min heat index of 104 to 110 or so) for the foreseeable future, nothing much enjoyable about that IMHO :p

Well that's the trade off for living in Dallas. Here in the NY Tri-State area it's about 80 F with blue skies and low humidity.

If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere!

Yes, this is the time of year where that trade off you refer too kicks me square in the pants. And here I am about to go put 20miles on my mountain bike in it. It won't kill me, but not for a lack a trying.

Dunno... There are good games, still, but recently, I've found that it's usually the big budget titels that end up a bit disappointing. Some of the smaller, independent titels still rock, though.
World of Goo and Terraria, for example. But even with the AAA titles, there are some good games. StarCraft II and Red Dead Redemption, for example.

After all, there weren't that many grat games released in any generation. Looking back, though, it seems just like that much more because we all know the great games and how many there are. But, what I think is true, is that some franchises took quite a nose dive. Prime example: Final Fantasy.

Buy a SNES console and some games. You should have tons of fun with one. You could also get a Wii and use the Virtual Console to play SNES games. I have a SNES console connected to my TV so I can play a classic game I like when I want to. My favourites are:

Donkey Kong Country
Killer Instinct
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario All Stars and World

I'd like to "get out" as well. I've been on graveyards shifts (6pm-6am) and will be until August. So my days off consist of waking up at five in the evening, spending time with my wife and son, then netflix or PS3 online while they are asleep. It's a curse really. :sly:

👍 The prime reason I'm holding onto my PS3 after the dud GT5 was to me, is The Last Guardian. If it's anything like Shadow of the Colossus, it's going to be huge.
SotC was one of, if not the best game of the last generation, I think.

Modern games are more lightweight than in the old days because the graphics have to be a lot better, which means you need a bigger team to draw and program everything and there's only so much people can achieve in so much time, but also within a certain budget.
Lots of PS3 games only look a bit better than PS2 because of this.
This is going to get tricky in the future.

Honestly I feel disappointed by the lack of choice about racing games on PS3. We have GT5 (played from Nov the 24th really need a break now) Shift 2 with the freeze issue, Shift 1 with ugly physics, Grid with not great physics either, Supercar/Ferrari Challenge which is nothing special, Superstars V8 Next Challenge (could be my next purchase) and... nothing else. I'm not considering F1 and Rally games the same genre, because they are about different kind of cars. I wonder what's the next big racing game about GT cars for PS3, if any.. No rumors yet, nothing of nothing...

It doesn't help that top sellers are generally series-based games which do not bring a ton of new innovation to the table (Sports, FPS, etc.) and big companies want to make safe bets in a weak economy. Going out on a limb for a drastically different game could break a developer or publisher if it flops too hard.

I'm looking at you, Tony Hawk: RIDE.

FPS went to **** after Battlefield 1942... Which was a great game.. But then CoD came out.. which was also great but every game after that has gone to ****. Except for Battlefield 2 which was great.

I like singleplayer FPS... Which has only seen a few games that haven't totally sucked since HL2 came out... I can really only think of a few games that blew me away... F.E.A.R. was amazing. Far Cry, Fallout 3, Doom and Quake obviously always solid... But outside of that I struggle to think of games that blew me away. Even slightly.

There only seems to be 2-3 if even games a year that are remotely worth buying.

Rockstar and Valve seem to be the only people that make good games consistently... Of course I don't have any new console so I can't speak for all platforms... But honestly, I haven't seen any console games since PS2/Xbox/Game Cube that got me to even think about purchasing a new one.

2004 was the last great year for gaming.

Have you seen Uncharted 2? Or Uncharted 3?
