gameshark, HELP!!! PLEASE

im borrowing a friends gameshark 2 v. 2 and it wont load up

I put in the "dongle" thingy put in slot 1, the disk, restart, ect. and when the ps2 loads up, it comes up to a red screen saying that IO should insert a ps2 or ps disk

what am I doing wrong?! PLEASE HELP I only have it thisafternoon

Might i suggest cleaning the disc and making sure it has no scratches on it?

my friends ps2 was modded, i think, could that be a problem?
