GAZ Chaika (M-13), 1959

The GAZ M13, debuted in 1958. It was produced from 1959 to 1981, with 3,179 built in all. The M13 was powered by a 195-hp SAE gross 5.5 L V8 and driven through a push-button automatic transmission of a similar design to the Chrysler TorqueFlite unit.

Chaikas were available only to the Soviet government, and could not be purchased by average citizens. However, citizens were allowed to rent Chaikas for weddings. Chaikas were used by Soviet ambassadors and Communist Party First Secretaries in East Germany, Korea, Bulgaria, Hungary, Mongolia, and Finland, among others. For their larger size and more powerful V8, Chaikas were also ordered in some quantity by the KGB. Top speed was 99 mph (159 km/h). Enthusiasts often point to the 1955-56 U.S. Packards as the inspiration for the early Chaika's styling. Nevertheless, Packards of 1955-56 are also have a lot in common with earlier Soviet concept ZIS-112 "Odnoglazka" (1951).

Hehe, let's see if it can take on the Japanese Kei-cars. Something like the "Red Pig" AMG vs Escort RS1600 competition in Project CARS.

There is a game where I drove this Chaika, it was a mod for City Car Driving.

The first VW Beetle model year was 1938, does that mean every Beetle until 2003 was a 1938 model? PLEASE think before you post.
Except the Beetle was changed constantly over time. A 1939 beetle looks entirely different to a 2003 Beetle. I'm not sure if that's the case with this car.

The GAZ 13 had some minor changes, like a better carburetor and interior trim.

But that's for the 13 model. The title needs to be changed for "GAZ 13 Chaika" because there was another Chaika model launched in 1977: the GAZ 14.

Firstly, there is quite a few noticable differences in appearance between those 2 cars. Also, the 1938 Beetle is a lot slower than a 2003 Beetle
The question mark in my first post was sarcastic. They're obviously different and I'm trying to prove the first guy wrong.

I did think. I even checked the car suggestions forum guidelines:

In all cases [Year] must be a four digit year and the first year of production or competition unless a specific year of production or competition is required.

Perhaps there is something specific about the 1978 year model that the OP wants, but if so it's not pointed out in any way in the description. And if there is nothing special about the 1978 year, then the car should be listed as a 1959 model.

PLEASE think before you post.

The OP has his reasons on why this is a 1978. Unless you have definite proof this is a 1959 mode, stop posting.

Apparently not, because it's now listed as a 1959 model. Which it should be, since it's the first year of production.

Fun Fact: The Chaika is a carbon copy of the 1956 Packard Clipper.
(EDIT: it's pretty darn similar in the styling dept. that's about it.)

The Chaika is NOT a copy of any American car. Just compare the number of windows to understand that even the sizes are different.

The visual design was inspired by American cars of the '50s, yes (particulatly the 1955 Packard Patrician), but technically, they are completely different cars. The GAZ uses original chassis with X-shaped frame and original aluminium block engine (AFAIK, aluminium blocks weren't popular in the US in the '50s). The automatic transmission was reverse-engineered from the Ford-O-Matic, though, but I'm not sure whether Ford used the button selector like the Chaika.

:D Never played this, but I know another Russian-made game where the Chaika 13 was present (as a mod) - City Car Driving (was known as 3D Instructor earlier). I've played it a lot when I was training for my driving license test, and the Chaika 13 was one of my favourite mods. Particularly because they made the button AT selector work properly (note the four buttons to the left of the steering wheel):

Ooh, maybe I should install it again. Haven't been playing it for almost 3 years. The newer version looks better...
Also, it's one of the only two games I know where mirrors do not ignore your own car (the other is Euro Truck Simulator series).

But still, it's very similar in the styling department with a 1955/1956 Packard. And Packard did provided a push button transmission, in 1956.
