July 24, 2006 - According to a an official release by Microsoft today, Gears of War may be hitting store shelves as early as of September 2006. The release centered on Megadeth headlining Gigantour, a Microsoft sponsored metal tour hopping across 25 major market venues from early September to mid-October 2006. While no concrete release date was cited, there were some curious comments by Craig Davison, Director of Global Games Marketing for Xbox.

"We're totally jazzed about the partnership between Gigantour 2006 and our forthcoming Xbox 360 blockbuster, 'Gears of War!'" says Davison. "Partnering a music extravaganza like GIGANTOUR with the launch of a mega-hit game like 'Gears of War' captures the excitement around two awesome happenings for fans of music and video games!" Launch? Does he mean Gears of War is launching at the start of, during, or at the end of Gigantour?

In the very same paragraph, Davison mentions Gears of War will be available this holiday season. Still, gamers have to wonder what he meant. When contacted, Microsoft maintained that an official announcement regarding the Gears of War release date has yet to be made.

...I would think later than September 23, but I can't make any sort of offical call on that. But hey, the sooner the better. GoW stuff keeps leaking all the time, and it all gets progressively better. Could it top Halo as the top-franchise on the XBOX? I doubt it, but it allready has a good chance...

I don't know, I really think people are giving GoW so much hype that it will actually "let them down".

I'm not saying it won't be good, I think it'll be pretty fun...but I also think it's got so much riding on it being the first "must have" title for the 360 that it will get either widely recieved as a great game, or crapped on by the masses.

You are right in being skeptical, but everything has been pointing to "good" from day one. Granted, I suppose with Halo it was the exact opposite, but it does a lot to create good press for the game.

I'd peg it no less than an 85% on the scale of kick-ass titles, but it is going to have a steep learning curve from what I understand, and some people might not like that.

I can't wait too see that game in action on my 360. :)

From what I've seen, it seems to have no learning curve at all. Unless the control scheme is extremely complex.

From all of the leaked videos, all that it seems to suggest is that you take cover (being the main element of the game) and wait for your target to become vulnurable. The only way I can see a "learning curve" coming into play is with multiplayer online, but even then it's 4 on 4 teams, so really you're still a little limited in your team formations etc.

And while I agree that I don't think the game will "suck" I really haven't seen much to point to "good" except for exceptional videos. All of the other news reports talk about the same typical functions and features we've seen a dozen times before in games of this genre...this is just extremely pretty.

Mr Deap - Gears of War might look decent in select screen shots, but it looks no where near the level of Advent children. The fact that each hair on Cids head is modeled and not clumps of transparent textures is enough to think GoW looks shabby in comparison.

Also the lighting in GoW is extremely unnatural and gives of very awkward shadows and highlights on the faces, I'm not particularly a fan of that "style" they are trying to use, but that's more personal taste. Not to mention the goggles feature no transparency what so ever, just a bland texture layed on them.

I found that comparison on another forum. It's a funny pic.

On the learning cure:

I was refering to the whole "stop and pop" type of gameplay, something that really hasn't taken off in this post-Halo FPS world. Granted of course GoW is a 3PS, but I know I'm going to have to adjust personally.

About the graphics:

I belive that is an in-game render, and given that it is cropped as it is, you aren't taking in the full beauty of the shot.

I can see where you're coming from with gamers having to adjust. Most will want to run and gun, vs think.

As for the image, while it is pretty, and the crop definately doesn't do it justice, the Advent Children Render used is also cropped, and if you check out the full res image of that scene, it's extremely impressive (though again, we're talking CG vs Real time Render, so it's pointless, lol).

Yes, that is an in-engine real time render.
