General opinion polls

I frequent another online community that has random general member polls on the side of the main page. It is interesting to see where I fit in with other members in surveys like

To what level are you educated? (if you're still studying, pick the level you're currently at)
Do you use internet services such as iTunes and eMusic to buy 'digital' music online?
How old are you?
Where do you live?
How do you usually listen to music on the move?
How many hours work do you do a week?

I think it would be interesting to have this function somewhere (but not actual threads) so that people can get a feel for what the community they helped build is made up of. The questions can be Gran Turismo-geared, or even used by the staff to get an idea of how members feel about certain GTPlanet tools and features. Of course, this other site had some random other polls, (these kinds don't have to be inlcuded here) such as

Pirate or Ninja?
Rock, paper, scissors!?
Which was the worst Star Wars movie?

etc etc

Any ideas on making this part of GTP?
 
Maybe putting this kind of stuff on official polls on the main GTPlanet page will prevent threads with similarly trivial topics from being made. Sounds okay to me. 👍
 
Sounds pretty cool to me, it would be interesting to see how everyone is divided up...
 
I agree, sounds like an good idea and it would be interesting to see the results that would be a quick way to gain more knowledge about the people around you. 👍

Yea that sounds good. We have enough members to get a good number of voters, might be very interesting if we can think of some good questions...
 
It's the singular higherup, actually. Jordan is the one who will have to decide if he likes the idea, and who will have to do the coding if he does.
 
You know what this thread needs? A poll!

I have to buck the trend somewhat and say I wouldn't like this - unless it was an option you could turn off, in which case I wouldn't see the problem with it - literally. To be frank, I don't see why anybody would want to know that 78.3% of people use iPods rather than Creatives, or that the site contains 50% Pirates and 50% Ninjas. Alot of the more basic info about yourself can already be displayed in your Profile...

I agree that it may reduce spam threads, but it might also have the 'opposite' effect of reducing decent threads and/or discussions in the forums as well. Imgaine how dull life would be if you could just tick a few boxes to explain who you are and how you feel about a subject. Do these surveys really tell you anything about the people on the site?
 
These topics sound like a lot better thread topics as opposed to individual polls. Sure, it's not a bad idea by any measure, but I really don't see such general polls adding to the sense of community here. Online relationships are best forged with discussion, which is what we really want to encourage. :)

If I want to know how old I am compared to other members, I have to click on a random selection of profiles and collect the data (not to mention people have a problem with showing their age, polls are anonymous)? If you don't want to see the poll results, just don't participate, it doesn't have to be a function to turn on or off. If you don't like discussing your fitness strategies for the week, don't go to that section of the boards, it's the same deal.

I'm not going to try to pursue this any further, the decision's been made and there's nothing we can do to change it. Oh well...
