One of the world's biggest automotive players in the world is Toyota. They have competed in Formula One, World Rally, Andros Ice Racing, NASCAR Craftsman Trucks, the Indy Racing Leauge, CART, IMSA, the Japanese GT Championship, and Le Mans to name a few. Their automobiles range from vintage cars such as the beautiful Toyota 2000GT, all the way up to the racy front-drive Celica of today, to the awesome GT-One Le Mans racer. And let us not forget the Altezza, MR2, Corolla, Camry, and the best offering from them, the Toyota Supra. The "fanboys" are getting into the Toyota Corolla to us, but more commonly reffered to as the AE86. The "eight-six" of today is better known by fans of the "Initial D" Anime series. The Supra is one of my personal favorites. It's rival in the JGTC were the almighty Skyline teams. And of course, the Supra won the title in 2002 Esso Ultraflo Supra, but couldn't repeat as the Motul Skylines won last year. The Autobacs MR-S can be seen in GT3, and it has a championship win in the JGTC. And let's not forget the Altezza in which we call the Lexus IS300. This sports sedan is anything but mundane. It may not be able to knock off any BMW sedans in its class (or prove me wrong, M5!), but it is certainly an exciting car from almost any angle, even if you don't like the tuner-style taillights which coined its own generic term for such lights. I'm talking, of course, about the Altezza-style taillights.

I've devoted this thread to Toyota. So bring on your Toyota talk!

Nope, I agree.

Incidentally, did you know that there is not one single Toyota on the market that does zero to sixty in less than 6.9 seconds?

Im proud to own a 93' toyota corrola. I have never had problems with my corrola...EVER.

How's that? Supra? MR2? Lexus GS? IS? (assuming we can talk about cars that arn't produced or are a division of Toyota)

Anyway, I've always been a fan of Toyotas just seemed like a good company with solid cars. I've always looked at Toyota as good and Honda as evil. I've always felt when I get into a Honda like they are forcing the car on me, that I will know it's not my car but a honda I'm driving and then I want to puke. With Toyota it feels like my car and it isn't being forced on me that it's a Toyota. I know this is not a valid reason to not like honda and many people keep saying that but that's how it is for me. If I had to pick a car especially if it's between a Honda and Toyota I will probably always pick Toyota.

BTW, I have an '88 Corolla SR5 (2dr.) Black

What about the Toyota Soarer 430SCV, I cant find any performance specs on it but it would be close.

I get the same feeling, but with Holden as good and Ford as evil.

Hiya! :O :D

Toyota! :D:D:D I really admire Toyota's marketing and pricing of their cars. Cheap, reliable and easy to drive! :O Toyota to me dont seem to bring out alot of performance cars anymore, but they sell...REALLY SELL their cars to become a very big competitor :O I do wish I can have a Supra...but ill ask later after I get a Bachelor degree :O... Anyways..yea its like this:

"We sell performance cars! 50+K"

Toyota: "We sell cars suited for daily drive! CHEAP! RELIABLE! EASY ON GAS" :O:O

Toyota sure do kno whow to attract the biggest amount of customers due to like about...90%+ of the customers that cares more about going to from point A to point B more than performance! :O:O

Supra = You know, I distinctly remember the Toyota Supra being cancelled in 1998.
MR2 = The MR2 has a 138-horsepower 1.8L 4-cylinder and is... slow. 0-60 in 7.0-7.3.
Lexus GS300 = 0-60 in 7.6
Lexus GS430 = 0-60 in 6.9
Lexus IS300 = 0-60 in 7.3

You actually couldn't come up with the two quickest Lexuses on the market, the LS430 (6.1) and SC430 (6.2). But when I made the statement "there is not one single Toyota on the market that does zero to sixty in less than 6.9 seconds" I actually meant "there is not one single Toyota on the market that does zero to sixty in less than 6.9 seconds" and therefore Lexus isn't counting.

What about the Toyota Soarer 430SCV, I cant find any performance specs on it but it would be close.

If you're referring to the Lexus SC430, then it's sold here as a Lexus and therefore doesn't count.

That's exactly what makes Toyota great in my mind, yet makes me never want to drive one. I'd never drive, let alone own a Corolla or Camry. They are good, reliable cars that are easy on fuel and are extremely affordable. But for a little more money, I'd rather get all that and some driving performance in a different car.

Toyota has only produced 2 cars that I've liked. The Supra and the MR2. The Supra speaks for itself as a tuner's dream, while the MR2 is one of the most affordable mid engine cars ever produced. Both are great performance cars, but they aren't built anymore. I'd add the Celica to that group but it's an FF car. Unless it's a hatchback (Mini more specifically) I can't see it being a great performance car. The IS300 is also good, but I'd never get one because I'd rather have a BMW 3 Series.

Toyota Soarer 430SCV is the same car as the Luxus but as Toyota, I didnt think this refered to US market only.

Okay folks. I'm going to give you a little lesson in knowing stuff.

When I say "there is not one single Toyota on the market that does zero to sixty in less than 6.9 seconds", I mean that there is no Toyota on the new car market that does zero to sixty in 6.9 seconds. And since in this instance I'm an American addressing an American, the "new car market" is the US market.

If I say "there is not one single Toyota that does zero to sixty in less than 6.9 seconds" I mean that there is not one single Toyota ever built anywhere on Earth that does zero to sixty in less than 6.9 seconds. Note that I did not say this.

And finally, if I say "there is not one single new Toyota in the world that does zero to sixty in less than 6.9 seconds" I mean that, worldwide, there is not one Toyota capable of 0-60 in less than 6.9 seconds, which, I also did not say.

The quickest USDM Toyota is...

Toyota Solara V6. I don't think Toyota should be too proud that their quickest car is an automatic-only model.

But M5...what about the AE 86 HACHI ROKU!?

Ooooh. Good point. I concede my soul to the Hachi Roku.

I always knew M5 was a fanboy! :dunce: :scared:

As for the JGTC Supra's, they use a V8 in their Supra. I heard it came out of the Toyota Tundra.

Hey M5, since you are the king at doing research, can you find the performance spec of a Toyota Century! It is rated 280ps/276hp but it has a V12 under the hood. I cant seem to find any spec on this JDM Toyota. It does seem to weigh alot, so im not expecting to find any sport car inside that huge luxury sedan!

Also, when can we (americans) get a V12? ;)

Can't find it - but I wonder what the true power rating is.

Also, when can we (americans) get a V12? ;)

Unbelievably to me, Lexus is actually mulling over giving the LS430 a V12 so it can compete with the 760Li and S600. Lexus is disgruntled because the original LS400 had undeniable impact while the current one is largely ignored. The LS430 is getting redesigned in early summer 2007, so we'll see then.

ConsumerGuide says it might have a hybrid V8 engine too - given Toyota's penchant for hybrid engines I wouldn't say this is impossible but I don't buy it - if Lexus wants impact, this car must have a V12. Maybe it'll have the 4.3 V8, a V8 hybrid, and the V12... :D

Ugh, I'm probably going to have to buy a Tercel, ugh... :indiff:

It seems to be a good idea to give the LS430 a V12! Didnt someone said that Lexus is coming out with a performance division like AMG for Mercede-benz? Wonder when that will take place?

I hate new Toyotas with a passion, I can honestly can say that I don't like any of them. The look weird, and they are just not what I would call something I would want to drive.

Now old Toyotas, I love them. The MR2, first gen Supras, and Celicas. All great cars.

Hopefully soon - Lexus can't afford to spend much time out of the performance game. But then again everyone has a performance divison now. Following BMW (M) and Mercedes (AMG), we've got:

- Audi (S)
- Cadillac (V)
- Chevrolet (Z##)
- Chrysler/Dodge (SRT)
- Ford (SVT)
- Jaguar (R)
- Pontiac (GXP)
- Volvo (R)

we have a 1979 toyota pick up original engine and everything over 300,000 miles this truck lasts forever! man it's even older than me!

Hiya again to not only McLaren'sAngel, but also M5Power, who has to be GTPlanet's number one car stat guy. Or as in ESPN terms, "stat boy."

McLaren, you've stated that "Toyota sure do kno whow to attract the biggest amount of customers due to like about...90%+ of the customers that cares more about going to from point A to point B more than performance," so let's see what I can ask you. McLaren, as a fan of the Nissan Skyline, you obviously know about the rivalry between Toyota and Nissan, especially in motorsport. I can remember the JGTC fight last year at the Autopolis Circuit in Oita, Japan (beautiful city). I can recall Skylines banging into Supras, then Supras banging into Skylines last year. Anyhow, what you said about Toyota was mentioned in quotation.

So which Japanese car company do you think does the better job at "Point A to Point B" regardless of performance? Toyota or Honda?

I created two topics way back called "The Next Supra" and "Can the Toyota Alessandro Volta Change the Way We Look at Supercars?" If you ask me, Toyota is trying to crack into the supercar market. But I won't be totally satisfied until Toyota can come up with a machine that is as beautiful as the Toyota 2000GT. In one thread, I was pretty poetic as to how lovely I thought it was. But I think that job is going to be taken by the next Supra. The Next Supra is rumored to kind of bring back styling cues of the 2000GT.

I guess in the meanwhile, kind of imagine a Supra combined with the styling of the 2000GT. If you've never seen the 2000GT before, here are two ways to see how it looks:

(1) play Gran Turismo 2 and look for the car in the Historic Car Cup or in the Toyota Used Car lot
(2) look up pictures and history of the car online

Regardless, I have full faith in Toyota to step up in the Japanese car market.

I'm thrusting my own opinion in here - it's Toyota, for the reason I mentioned: no quick cars! Their quickest car is an automatic transmission 4-seat coupe that's three inches longer than the midsize sedan it's based on. The only Toyotas that are somewhat performance-oriented (MR2 and Celica) are still trash - MR2 has less cargo space than everything on the market, and even the nicest Celica GT-S for sale won't beat in-class rivals. Truthfully you can get some excitement when you break it down by class (the Camry SE V6 is an exciting midsize sedan, the Matrix XRS is an exciting compact car) but nothing is a standout for excitement. This isn't true at Honda, where you've got the S2000, a fun, peppy, sporty roadster, and the Accord V6 coupe 6-speed, one of the ten quickest front-wheel drive cars on the market. Hell, even Honda minivans are quick: Odyssey is the quickest ever, doing 0 to 60 in 7.7 seconds. Both Toyota and Honda produce point a to point b cars, but Toyota does a better and certainly more obvious job of it.

Now - on a board of car enthusiasts like all of you, this seems horrible, but there's a reason Toyota is beginning to overtake the big three in sales: they're a full-line car maker with a reputation for reliability and economy. Frankly, if I were Toyota, I'd trade in a sporty image for profit and sales too. The good thing is they don't even have to do that - by creating Scion, they can have the best of both worlds: a sporty image in one branch, a mainstream image in another, and a luxury image in a third.

All that said, I don't agree with any of it because there aren't enough manu-matic transmissions offered. 👎

You speak of Scion. Many hate the Xb, the other don't. What I told my brother earlier tonight was that if you don't like Scion, you have to like the tC at least. It's the most decent-looking one (that is, if you dislike Scion). Scion noted that the tC is the car you can go racing with, so I really wouldn't be surprised if any make it to either SCCA Club Racing or even in SPEED Touring Car (the Sonoma race is later today, granted that it's Sunday on the East Coast and Central).

Toyotas nowadays have adopted more of a futuristic look. Even that truck concept from Toyota looks like it can step up even higher. I think Japanese trucks are stepping up here in America. I mean, it wouldn't be long when you finally say "performed better than," "(Titan or Tundra)," and some American truck, all in the same sentence. Big, bad trucks with power to match is an American tradition pretty much, so if Japan wants a piece of the pie, much less Toyota, then let them. I think of the latest Tundra as a wolf in sheep's clothing. It's all man-power but gets plenty of girls. I mean, in looks alone.

In a future post, I'll talk about some of Toyota's latest cars and try to come up with visions to help boost the popularity and sales of the latest Toyotas. Some may agree, some may not. But in the future, I'll talk more about it. You are dismissed.

I think of the latest Tundra as a wolf in sheep's clothing. It's all man-power but gets plenty of girls. I mean, in looks alone.

I love the Titan - I just ordered one - but I think the Tundra isn't yet a competitor. Toyota tried to get into this market the hard way. Very few people know it, but Toyota actually attempted to get into the full-size truck market before the Tundra, in 1993 with a full-size truck known as the T100. Though it was a flop, it went for five years and gave Toyota some lessons in what not to do. And it the best-looking truck of all time, in my opinion:

95812151990612LRG.jpg

Anyway, the T100 was a bad mistake - the standard engine was a four-cylinder and no V8 was available, giving it the 'not tough' image that you can't have when trying to compete against established, domestic players in a brand loyal market that demands tough. Basically, the only way you can steal buyers is if you offer more. Nissan figured that out.

In 2000, when Toyota finally returned to the truck market with the Tundra (after a year off in 1999 - though it seemed like three years off; no Toyota truck has ever sold less than the T100 did in 1997 and 1998), they didn't give it enough beef, and engine size now lags below competitors: 190bhp 3.4L V6 is an okay standard engine, but the optional V8 only increases power by 50 to 240 - putting it below Ford's optional engine (300hp 5.4 V8), Chevrolet/GMC's optional engine (285hp 4.8 V8 or 295hp 5.3 V8), Nissan's engine (305hp 5.6 V8) and Dodge's Hemi V8 (345hp 5.7 V8). If brand loyalty isn't a factor in truck buying, trucks often go through scrutiny on paper and 240hp doesn't stand up, especially at $29000 for a crew cab.

My Dad's looking at a Sienna XLE. We've also got a '98 Corolla, and we'll be getting a Scion xB for my...Stepmother...

Your stepmother must be pretty trendy, AP1. Hope she likes it and has fun in it.
