I tried to paticipate in a race in some private lobby last night and could enter the lobby with no problem. Then I entered the race and was disconnected from it before I could finish a single lap. This happened again and again, there was nothing I could do against it.
Similar things happened to me in the open lobby.

I'm connected to a router, my NAT type is 2 and I can see the DNS primary IP adress (connection test). I have also disabled the media server and UPNP is activated both in the router and PS3.

What else can I do to improve my connection for online races? I really need help here because I was really depressed when the disconnection happened to me last night. I was looking forward to this race the whole week, tuned my car and was performing hot laps to achieve good lap times. The online part is so important for me...

I had the same problem. However, I had it with pretty much any online game. PSN itself connected fine, downloads were fine, movie store/netflix all worked great. If I went to any online game I got dumped usually before I could even get onto the course.

Plugged the PS3 directly into the cable modem, no problems. Plug through the router and problems returned. Conveniently, I had two WRT610n's (running DD-wrt) so I swapped them, and it has worked just fine since.

In the end, it was a hardware problem that only showed itself on the PS3 for online games. All the other PC's(wired/wifi) worked just fine, could play online with no errors, ran p2p absolutely fine. All the other equipment worked just fine, except the PS3 and that router. Took me a long time to narrow it down to the router since I didn't believe that had a problem with not a single other network device having a problem. So don't just assume the router is fine because everything else works fine.

I have found a solution!
My router shared the internet connection with all my devices (notebooks, ps3 and so on). But this does not work.
You have to set everything up so that your PS3 connects to the internet by itself. This is found under "PPoE".
Now I have NAT Type 1! :-D
