Hello all,

I am a long time lurker and enjoy this wonderful site. I currently own a PS2, but am picking up an Xbox 360 at the beginning of next month. I currently play on a 32" RCA and decided I wanted to get an LCD HDTV that supports 1080i. The new TV that I am getting delivered tomorrow is a 42" Philips LCD which can be found here..

I am new to console gaming, but from what I understand 1080i is much better than standard. How much does this affect the graphics on the Xbox 360? Does it make a huge improvement? I have been trying to find screenshot comparisons, but have not had any luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to GTP.
You are going to be in shock when you see the games on your new TV in 1080i. Major difference. Make sure to put Test Drive Unlimited at the top of your "must have" games for the 360. 👍

TraviStang I have had a LCD HDTV in 26inch size with 1080i since March, and the leap forward is great, but you should do your research first, but if you need some ideas I be glad to help. However if you can wait at least another year, then OLED 1080p sets may start to show up at great prices.

Also TraviStang I show you what the Xbox 360 games, GT4 on PS2 through component look like on my LCD HDTV, oh and one more thing in the next month or 2 I will be doing a Sky HD Box video review.

Call of Duty 2 looks great, but it doesn't have near the drool factor as GRAW or PGR3 or whatever.
But I cannot wait to see, what Crysis and Lair looks through an HDTV, even if they are not coming onto the Xbox 360.

My condolences. Philips is just awful in the US (in Europe, strangely, they're quite decent). The image is piddling, at best, and reliability is in the toilet. Good luck if you actually do have a problem, because you're on your own. Philips tech support is useless, followed by combative. For the same price, you could have gotten this:

Larger image, lighter chassis, more reliable, and even though it's got the same washed-out look as the Philips LCD, 20 minutes of calibration will result in a far superior image.

Good luck. 👍

Even though the screenshots above give a good comparision on the detail improvements, it certainly is better seeing the difference in person. The screenshots don't really show you how much more colourful and bright the picture is compared to a normal TV. Trust me, it's quite an improvement. :)

Thank you all for the informative replies. I had to work late today, so I am going to get the TV delivered in the morning. As for the quality of Philips customer service/product, I have heard nothing but good about the products and this one in particular. That 1080p sounds interesting, and will definitely be on my list when it comes out next year :) Btw, is there a list of PS2 games that support 1080i?

To be fair, most PS2 games will look horendous on a HD telly if you were only using standard definition, because it has to be upscaled. When I first tried GT4 I wondered if I could still play it.

Yep, agreed. We had to play all our 360 games on Standard Definition for a month or two before we could buy the proper cable for it, and the games looked quite terrible compared to a normal tube television. Unless you can put up with it, personally I'd stick to a normal TV.

Nice TV mate, you might consider moving this to the "electronics & home theatre" forums once your XB360 related questions are answered.

Cool TV. By the way, that TV (as 90% of LCDs are) is 1366x768p. It supports 720p and 1080i and scales them to that resolution. Anyway, things should look pretty good. With the Xbox360, make sure you use component cables (came with the console if you got Premium), or you could use VGA, but before you buy VGA cable for 360, check your TV's manual to see what resolutions it supports over VGA/"PC-input". With VGA cable, you can select a resolution of 1360x768 so the Xbox will scale all games to that resolution which should be quite handy. :dopey:

And for PS2, use component cable for that too and GT4 and Tourist Trophy support 1080i upscaling which looks pretty good.

I was gonna get me a 42 inch plasma or LCD but according to another forum its a waste of money as the technology on sale now will be majorly outdated a year from now.

Supposedly the way forward is with SED tv's and that current LCD and Plasma TV's have too many flaws for normal use to justify buying at the moment.

However if your going to be primarily using it to play 360 it should be great. Although I hear in the USA you guys have had HD for quite some time before us brits so it might not be the same for you guys.

If it all works as planned SED will be the number one performer out of the three TV types. I'm certainly holding out for one and the pricing is said to be on par with plasma's, which is good for new technology. I won't be buying a model from the first wave of TV's though, I've got plenty of time before I'm forced to buy HD.

I feel exactly the same. Its like those guys who spent £5000 for a 42 inch plasma a year ago and are now probably burning where you can pick up much better ones for cheaper.
