Getting rid of Ghost Cars

I've been trying to get rid of ghost cars but I havent found out how. The instruction manual says to press the up directional button to activate/deactivate them but it doesn't work! How do I get rid of the ghost cars when I play in the time trial section of the arcade?
 
Are you sure it really does not work? Try to go in the options menu to the controller settings and see wether somehow the setup for the ghost car has been changed.
 
Isnt there a place where it is also R3? I thought I saw that somewhere.

It's R3 in Tourist Trophy (I toggle it every time I hit the brakes!) but the directional up is the default in GT4. Controller settings may have been changed, so Options is where to look.
 
Please mind, it's the D-pad, not the sticks :)
