With all the complaints over A.I., I'm not sure if everyone has all of the right settings.

1. At the Main menu, go to Options, then click on Arcade (the first option) and set AI Car Characteristics to 10. This will only effect the A.I. in Arcade mode. Not in A-spec unfortunately.
2. Set the A.I. to Professional level (obviously) when you are entering Arcade mode.
3. I'd recommend the "Arcade Only" cars as they are all stock. You can ofcourse use a car from your favorites in your garage but it's best to keep it stock.
And by stock, I mean leave the Aerodynamics at default (A lot of people tend to edit their aerodynamic settings which doesn't make your car stock anymore)
4. Traction Control: OFF
SRF: OFF
Actice Steering: OFF
Active Stability Management (ASM): ON (yes on all of the A.I. run this on)
ABS: OFF (yes off all of the A.I run this off)
Grip Reduction set to Real
Having the ASM on and ABS off makes your car and the A.I.'s car a lot more fair.
5. Always use tires similar to the A.I. Don't just put on Racing softs. And sometimes to increase the challenge, use a tire compound that is one step worse then what the A.I. uses. That means if the A.I. is on Racing Hards, use Sports Soft. Just more of a challenge.

I've actually been enjoying racing the A.I. lately.
If anyone has more tips, it'd be great to share.

using the "arcade only" cars leaves you without the ability to adjust the brake bias- and when ABS is off thats a total disaster. Gotta be able to set those brakes down to 1-0 or 2-1 to get a nice feel from no ABS. Just use cars from your favorites and mind the tuning. You want to be even with the a.i. in the straights, and then choose tires that will have you sticking even with them in long turns- this is an easy way to get a nice setup. Now, they run terrible, train-like lines and brake/turn/accellerate like old ladies (yes even at level 10), but some great fun can be had after some painstaking trial-and-error to get an even setup. Even after all of that, though- you will probably have to set your car to be even with the bulk of the a.i. pack, and not the race leading rabbit. Let him run away and do his little time-trial. Otherwise you will just be breezing by 10 a.i. on your way to run your own time-trial in order to catch p1. My goodness, I almost fel asleep typing that last bit. Just the thought of it... :yuck:

I haven't tried it but, couldn't you set one of the buttons to the RA Menu and adjust the brakes in-game?

I choose from my favourites because of braking bias. Though, I usually use 10 on my front and around 6 on the back. I used to use less on the front and though why not use 10 and then my rear brake has more fine adjustment.
The arcade is my favourite mode by far. I recommend C for your buddy that is new and B when you are looking for a cruise with traffic and A when you want a challenge. And A with damage + tyre wear and fuel when you are on nurburgring or scarth with 4 minute hours (15) and min 4 laps (10 is sweet)
Throttle the difficulty with tyre selection and/or tuning. Start the game with stock and comfort hard. Then increase tyre spec and/or tuning to match competition. It seems the cpu/npc's are locked to tyre and performance points before the track loads.
Racing for 45 min stints is best once all the details are sorted. And keep notes about sweet racing. I got a old notebook from ages ago and it is filled with my race configurations. Even a simple out of ten rating is enough to make having enjoyable races occure more frequently.

AI Car Characteristics doesn't seem to make them faster. I tested at 0 and 10, they did the same lap time in Arcade (Pro, NASCAR, La Sarthe, 3'59 for lead car). Last time I compared lap times, even the Pro mode in Arcade was slower than the same car in a Seasonal race. And I've been crying about the slow pace in the Seasonals forever ;)

But if they were just slow, that would be ok - it's that slowdown thing they do when you get too close or brake too hard near them, that's what is infuriating and destroys any hope that the AI will be competitive against you. Example, in the Ferrari F1 races, even when I'm running 740pp against their 870pp, I have to be careful how I approach them in corners so they don't block me by suddenly lifting all the way off.

Btw I adjust the brake bias in Arcade easily with the DF GT wheel's little selector thingie :)

Yes you could, even with the controller. Before I got my wheel I setup the RA menu by clicking in R3, then used the Dpad to scroll the menu's so I could adjust brakes and abs on the fly during races :)

The AI adjustment doesn't seem to affect their pace, it affects how much of that slowing down garbage they do. On 10 they don't park for you unless they really see no way to go without going through you(sometimes that will still look weird from our point of view). I think it supposedly affects their attempts to pass, but that's tough to verify as they only ever seem to try to pass if you make a mistake and lose pace while leaving a huge hole for them.

Enter a race with a car that has some upgrades to it and with high grip tires equipped. Before you start the race, take off the upgrades and change the tires. Do either one or both. Picking high grip tires only changes how much power the opponents' cars have or what level their cars are.

Where did you find that A.I. race with ABS turned off?
The other assists too. How?

One thing I do is I hit a car, damage on or off, I restart the race. But if i'm in a position to pit then I'll do that instead of restarting a 10 lap race on the Nurburgring. I know the A.I isn't exactly the best at racing but it would be neat to have the A.I fill in empty spaces in loby's if you choose to have them race.
