^ Did Buick became a world player in its 50+ year history? No. Lexus was a world contender since the 1st gen LS400, even Top Gear regarded that! :indiff:

I seem to recall them being quite popular in Europe and Australia, but quite right, they wouldn't have been able to hold a candle to your average Ford back in the day. Buick took off immediately in China, which speaks well for the brand when they actually have good products to begin with. As always, Buick fans in the US are still patiently waiting to get the proper Buicks here in the US...

I saw a Buick Reatta in red yesterday, and I thought that it looks good, they should make a car like that then I'll take a Buick over a Camry.

I think I agree with Toronado with this one...

I don't see the relevance to Jim's comparison in that statement.

Face it: It's only recently that Lexus has truly started to compare with BMW, Mercedes, and Audi. (In this country, anyway, where the only models those three sell are the high-end ones) When they started out in the U.S., they actually earmarked...yes...G.M.'s Buick and Cadillac divisions, then moved their way up.

My point was that Cadillac has done nearly the same thing since the CTS's introduction. No, I wouldn't say they're there...yet. The range is terribly incomplete: only the 5-series competitor, the CTS, is really up to global par.

Well, we're also forgetting that Lexus' plan for world domination came mostly out of pricing. They offered cars that were nearly as good as the Germans for 2/3s of the price, and arguably (as I understand it), lost money on almost every car they sold. But because of the success of the Toyota company overhead, it didn't matter. Granted, nowadays its a bit easier for them to make money and still do the 7/10ths pricing scheme, but they aren't nearly as "nimble" in the market as they used to be.

...This is exactly what Hyundai is attempting to do. They're trying to "pull a Lexus" on Lexus, and we'll see what happens...

The problem is, given that Buick is supposed to be the "Lexus competitor" (Cadillac is too good for that, they're shooting for BMW and Mercedes), this means that Buick has two targets that are both excellent, and ends up having to work ten times as hard because of Hyundai... As they are selling beyond excellent cars at the same price.
