Glitch or no...?

Hey all,
I've been working through all the single player races and noticed something not so cool. I'm currently doing the races in the IA section. There are full on race cars and events but I can't use racing soft tires....all the races say hard tires or less. This can't be right...can it? I haven't been able to use racing softs anywhere even tho I have the tires. Was the game designed this way or do they expect you to race on hard tires all the time? Any input on this would be great. thanks.

It's not a glitch.

Unlike a lot of the races in GT5 where you were pretty much free to use whatever tires you liked in GT6 this has all changed. Most (might be all) races in career mode have limited tire choice and I have yet to find one that allows racing softs.

I think the idea was to make the races a bit more of a challenge which may have worked if the AI were not as dumb as they are.

my guess is that it's PD's attempt to do one, some, or all of the following

A) make the races in career mode SLIGHTLY more interesting (since AI racing prowess is still pretty sucky)

B) encourage diversity of player of experience (forces noobs to not switch to RS on every dang car or the unwitty to purchase up to RHs from comforts/sports on their tuned rides)

C) Demand the player to tackle some races that test Gran Turismo's claim of being "the real driving simulator" (with the assumption that racing slicks rather than softs work in this direction).

As far as I've observed you can only choose as good a tire as the AI is using, or less (that being in the races which have restrictions on tires, if not all races?).

This is a massive improvement from GT5, where you couldn't see what your opponent was using before the race - meaning that I often started the race only to end it shortly after, and then watch the replay to see what they were running.

I also feel, personally, that Racing Soft tires in the game (still) have too much grip - at least without tire wear, so I don't care myself that I can't use them in the career mode.

RS tires are modeled differently as in GT5. Applying them to any car as a "get out of bad handling and steering situations" card no longer works. Try it, use an F40 with SH tires, then put RS tires on it, handling does not get badder, because road cars aren't built for slicks.

Plus I found it nice as it lets other players know that "surprisingly" there are other categories of tires besides Racing tires lol.

Except S races, some are Sports Soft restricted where street cars are required, but with the others it's unlimited.

Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate it. At least now I know I'm not crazy. Kinda sucky tho....I did really enjoy the RS tires.....oh well.....time to relearn how to drive

You're in exactly the right place to get the right kind of help to achieve that. Have a look here:

Its a competitive series, yes but we're a community first and a competition second and its a great way to pick up techniques and get tips from more experienced drivers. We also have amongst our members some of the fastest GTers around from whom you can learn.

Have a browse through my YouTube channel (in signature) to see some of the car/track combos we've run. There's a different TT every week and then each TT is run as a live race the following week. There's also a race academy for those wishing to learn race craft with one-to-one tutoring on occasion if required.

We're currently running the qualifier for GT6 WRS Registry if you decide to have a go. The deadline for the initial registry is Monday 13th Jan @ 23.59GMT, after which it will close briefly while we process the first round of entries.
