For quite a long time people have been a bit picky about the engine choices, displacements, and outputs for a large portion of their models, but with the strong performance of the "High Feature" 3.6L unit over the past few years, it is due time to allow the same technology to be applied to other units.

Coming first from news on the next-gen Buick LaCrosse, GM has two tricks up its sleeve:

NEW "LF1" 3.0 Direct-Injection V6
Good for 250 BHP
Reportedly 28-29 MPG when matched with a six-speed automatic

UPDATED "LLT" 3.6L Direct-Injection V6
New updates from the Lambda crossovers will give the 3.6L engine a solid 290 BHP for the non-performance models

Then, from Details on the Theta-based SRX and Equinox...

NEW (Unnamed) 2.3L Direct-Injection I4
Reportedly good for 210 BHP (non-turbo)
No word on fuel economy

With mounting pressure from Ford/Mazda, Honda and Toyota, it seems the General is looking to capitalize on some of their new technology for their new vehicles. Question is, however, can they get them out in time to make a difference?

Blah blah, the V6s are either something we already knew about (Lambda 3.6) or ultimately irrelevant (3.0). Though it would be nice if all of the 3.6L V6s had near the 300 horsepower range rather than offering the 270 horse version as a base.

However, on this 2.3L I4? Wow. Put that it the Solstice, stat!

"Economic" engines are the OHV V6s that are offered in the "lesser" cars and trucks, engines like the 3.5L and 3.9L V6 come to mind. I'm under the assumption that the 3.0L and 3.6L HF engines will eventually replace all of the V6s across the board, and between GM's new 1.4L and 2.3L HF engines, they too will eventually see to the demise of the 1.8-2.4L I4s.

That I4 looks quite fancy indeed! I'm more interested in the torque, and redline, though. Either GM's done something impressive, or something totally sweet. Either way, I can think of a few cars that need that, STAT.
