First Post!

Anyway, I have been using the plain-old DS3 controller since GT2 and enjoyed moderate success, enough to keep me interested - up until GT5 that is. But yesterday I got a great deal on a barely-used logitech wheel, so I grabbed it in anticipation that I'd be burning up the track in no time.

Boy, was I wrong. I was all over the damn place, oversteer, understeer, spinouts, it was a disaster.:dunce:

Please tell me the learning curve on these things aren't too drawn out. I'm thinking of just starting a brand new game and going slow.

Thanks for all of the great advice I've gotten from this forum for ages.

Everything new takes time. You'll get used to it pretty quick though.

I made this change when prologue was released it took abit more time because prologue was very slippy compared to GT5, But all i can say is drive it lke you would a real car.

The point is, a lot of kids have grown up using a game controller & have become very adept at using it. It takes a while to develop a similar skill level with an unfamiliar peripheral.

I just got my wheel this week, and after realizing I was crap I went back to the beginner series and cars with almost no power. It takes a while, but I'm getting the hang of it now.

yeah, i used to use the controller aswell and got a Fanatec 911 Turbo S for my birthday. i was rubbish at first, but i became better as i used it more.

Just practice more and give youself time to learn it. Dont drive like you are still using a controller, drive like as you are driving a car in an open road in real life.

Its hard at first but its quite amazing once you passed that.

Two words....Slow down...

I just got a wheel too, start with the slow cars in the practice section then move your way up to faster ones.

My biggest thing was to slow down. With the controller I would blast around, full on gas to full on brakes.. With the wheel you have to take your time and ease in to the gas/brakes.

Having used a controller all my life I switched to a wheel this week when I got my Fanatec GT3.

I have adapted pretty well, but I find it takes a bit of time to learn how to handle a new car best with the wheel, but once you've got that I find myself quicker.

A good tip is to go through the license tests and then the special events, that way you'll build up your skills with the wheel.

I found that the difference between a steering wheel mounted to a table/desk and sitting your butt in an office chair to a decent racing rig is everything. The force feedback of the wheels these days is gonna mess your day up if you don't have it attached to something solid. Not to mention your body better be stationary as well..

resident genius SlowEddy has one of the best builds yet due to fact that PVC is so darn easy to work with. Not to mention VERY cheap if you don't wrap it in 3M carbon fiber, lol.

You'll need to locate a seat- an auto junkyard is surely the way to go. Although ebay has some nice cheap racing seats.

here's a few other good ideas:

It definitely takes time to get used to a wheel and pedals. Actions that your ultra-fast fingers and thumbs have performed for years are now done by your feet/calf muscles. Thats a big deal. The better job you do of pretending to be in a real racecar, the better you will actually perform. This can be made much more enjoyable with a solid racing rig.

You will get it. Just start with the slow, easy races. I used a controller through GT4 and Forza 2. I started with a wheel a few years ago and have never looked back. I started with a MS Xbox 360 racing wheel, graduated to a Logitech Driving Force GT wheel and I now use a Fanatec GT2 wheel with Clubsport pedals and wheelstandpro.

License tests from the very beginning will help you. Also put the FFB around 5 will relieve some of the fighting. Slower cars are the way to go until you learn how to use your new wheel.

Makes me laugh everytime I read these posts about moving from a DS3 to a wheel. Reminds me of the movie Men in Black II where Will Smith is driving his rocket car with a controller! I have a wheel and I am like Tommy Lee Jones. I cannot fathom driving a car with a DS3 controller.

No wonder there are so many car accidents on the road. They need to put DS3 controllers in the cars so kids can drive better! :)

Spacetravel much ??

DS3 on Gt2. If you would have market it right, you could be billionaire. Sony surly would have bought a DS3 contoller in 2000.

Just kidding.

Yeah, you going to improve. Patience young padawan
