Going to buy a decent mouse - is this a good deal?

At the moment, this is still my favorite mouse:

I've got 3 of them. The only problem I've had is that one of them started to get some gunk on the wheel, so I had to take a file to the opening in the mouse that the wheel pokes through. That's it though, and it only happened to one of them. I've had all of them for more than 4 years.

Yes, that's the other mouse I've kept an eye on due to all the hype it has received. But for a little higher cost I can go for the much superior MX518 (spec-wise anyway).

I recommend the MX518, especially if you will be using it for gaming. Mouse technology hasn't really changed much. There are the laser mice, but they're not that much better if at all.

Ahh, very cool. I just bought an Apple Wired Keyboard the other day, looking forwards to having a proper kb/mouse combo for this MBP!

wow are you guy's kidding?! i buy like $15 mice and i'm pleased with them. you should really actually buy a microsoft one because i have two and they can pick up any movement, on any type of table. Whereas my logitec one must be on some sort of mouse pad. then again you could go old school and buy one with a ball.

I also just bought a wired keyboard. I love the thing. It isn't for a MBP, though. :guilty:

My only gripe at the moment is that it won't work in BIOS with legacy USB support enabled, even with a USB to PS/2 adapter. This is on an old Compaq with USB 1.1. I'm gonna steal a friend's USB 2.0 card and see if that changes anything.

I could care less about it working in the BIOS, but it doesn't function at the GRUB menu, either.

Edit: And for the topic - get a G5 or G7. I love my G7 to death.

A Logitech MX518 for £23 - the cheapest I've seen it by a long shot:

I've read some great reviews about it but then noticed it's a couple of years old already. So before I buy it, is there anything else out there for a similar price that's just as good?

Its a great mouse. One of the best I've ever worked with. Its wired, which is actually a nice thing for gaming and other precision work, as wireless just doesn't always seem to be perfect.

Yeah, I still don't trust wireless mice after experiences I've had with a couple of them. They tend to lag just a little, and they tend to eat through batteries.

I'm buying this for some gaming, especially if I want to become serious in the future work, and I tend to use Photoshop a bit, so the precision will help out there. I would buy a G5 or something on a similar level, but IMO they are fairly expensive and I find they contain ridiculous amounts of sensitivity that I will never take advantage of.

If it's for gaming, I highly recommend the MX518 - Have one and I absolutely love it !...

My MX1000 which I use for regular office work isn't half as good for gaming.

Still think the original MS itellimouse is the best... still working with no problems after so many years!

My friend is using the Logitech MX518 and he said it was awesome! Its good for gaming as well as for normal use and for £23, I think the deal isn't so bad....

Definitely they aren't kidding, some people just ask more from a mouse than you do. And about that Logitech vs. Microsoft thing, you either have a broken Logitech mouse or you don't know what you're talking about. I used a basic Microsoft mouse at work for three months and the cursor must have been suffering from caffeine overdose, it just didn't go where I wanted it to. Swapped it for a basic Logitech one and there haven't been problems ever since. No mouse pad, just a wooden table.

My own one is the one that came with the LX710 desktop, and undoubtedly the best mouse I've ever used. As far as I know, it's the same one as the stand-alone LX7 mouse with the exception of being a laser version. A corded one is available as the LX3 and a corded laser one as the V150.

In the corded lines of mouses, I've been using the G5 for some time now and really like it. With different weighted options, you can get it to feel 'just right' in your hand. Button placement and feel are also good. The only downside I see is it's a little expensive.

I forgot to mention that I also own a wireless logitech mouse/keyboard combo... the microsoft intellimouse is way better, and was way cheaper.
