I just booked a flight going to France in February and will be taking a lot of pictures. I might buy a nice digital camera from canon and need to know, where am I going to upload all the pictures since I cant take my computer with me. Do I buy those usb sticks or what? Im really confused about this and am worried that if their saved onto the camera and something happens when I get home and upload, what if their not there . And what if the camera comes with a memory card, do I have to buy a memory card drive and install it by my cd burners, and if so I could just get about 2 more cards then right? Sorry about all the questions, and thanks for your time :)

Since its a new camera from Canon, I'm assuming it uses a CompactFlash card because thats what my PowerShot A80 uses (as do most modern digicams). I have a 256mb CF card and I can store more than enough pictures on it at 640x480 res. I'm assuming the camera came with a 32mb card, I would invest in a higher capacity card, as you will be able to store as many pictures as you need.

Unless you drop the card in water or something the pictures will be there, they won't disappear on you :).

For transferring purposes, you can buy a USB2.0 CF reader for somewhere around 20 bucks I believe. You just plug it into the USB port put the card in the other end, and then you can open a folder with all your pictures in it (in groups of 100).

Hope this helps.

Also, bring LOTS of batteries. My A80 eats batteries like they were fried chicken or somethin.

man VTGT07 your great! Im going to France to see my Uncle, aunt, and cousins. I haven't seen them in 10 years. Their moving to the U.S so they said I should go there because I dont know anybody else in France so its my last chance to see the sights. I went in 96' and didnt have a digital camera, so I'm taking a bunch now hah. I was so scared the first time I went on the Eiffel Tower at the very top lol. Thanks again guys.

No problem man, always glad to help.

One last thing :) , Heres what I decided on..

Flash Card-

Card Reader-

Everything looks pretty good right, how many pictures do you think would fill that 512mb card? Thanks again 👍
Depending on the Detail and Picture Size the amount of images is going to be in huge numbers. If you take a bunch of 800x600 pictures, i'm sure you could get a few hundred pictures in there. on superfine and 1600x1200 I get about 120pictures on my 128mb card.

Take pictures sizes into consideration, most of them will be between 500kb and 1MB. If your pictures are less than 1mb each, not taking formatting into effect, you could get 512 pictures. None the less, you won't be running out of pictures if you have the stock memory card and the 512mb flash card. :sly:

When I went to Japan, US and Canada I filled up my 32Mb internal memory and 256Mb external memory, so all I did while I was in canada is go into a photo developing shop and get all my pics on CD. After that I was free to fill it up again.

Thats another idea, thanks. I'll have 400-500 spending money while im there, I have no clue how many Euros that comes out to, but I should manage if I have to go to a development place. I really think that 512mb card is enough. Can't wait to check out the Euro currency as its a little higher than the dollar 👍 .

Assuming you're taking the pictures in 640x480 resolution, and the formatting of and system files on the CF card takes up 12 megs, that would give you approxiamately 3,011 pictures, using 170 as the average filesize, which is an overestimate.

(500 * 1024) / 170 = 3011.76

It will probably be a little closer to 3200 pictures IMO. Probably alot more than you'll need :). Which is never a bad thing.

edit:
To be honest about the camera, its a good camera, I would recommend getting one with a higher zoom. Something with atleast a 2x analog zoom and digital zoom on top of that. The A80 has 3x analog and 8x digital zoom and I love it.

For updated exchange rates just go to http://www.xe.com . They have all the currency exchange rates you need.

On another note, if you want cool pictures, don't settle with 640x480 pictures, at the bare minimum go with 800x600. Make sure you get a camera with no less than 3 megapixels, those are the best. My camera has 2.1 MP and I really dislike it. Hope this all works for ya.

Actually no it won't .. the camera supports xD cards and the one you picked is a CF card. They're completely different designs and it would be sorta like sqeezing a triangle into a circle on that little shape recognition thing from kindergarten.

I would recommend this one:

And you're also gonna need a different card reader:

Also, if your in the market for a new Printer/scanner/fax, HP has a great new toy. It's an HP photosmart 2610. We just bought one. The scanning has AMAZING detail and high quaity scans and prints. The prints I have made with this thing beat out the pictures you get from the store. We bought the optional photo ink cartridge that you easily replace to start printing pictures.

This thing takes in almost every single flash card for digital cameras. It uses a USB port, it also has an extra usb plug in the front just incase your out of space for things to plug in.

This thing is really cool though, you just plug in the memory and you can either use it as storage for anything (like a mini hard drive) or print the pictures right off of the LCD display, or even click and drag them on to your computer. I can't stress enough how cool this is, it's pricey, but very awesome to have. If you want, I can show you a scan I made at 1200dpi (it goes up to 9600dpi) I scanned my digital camera, and you can see in fine detail, each hair on the string. I think the picture was 9,000 x 10,000 pixels. :dopey: :sly:

attached is a little picture of the front ports where the cards plug in.

Guys you've been great! now I can go to France without worrying about losing my pictures and space haha. VTGT07 thanks for correcting me and showing me the right stuff, good thing I didnt order them :) . Even though the silver/grey faceplate doesnt match with my black case it sure gets the job done. I'll see If I can post pictures when im done.

No problem man. It was pretty much by pure chance that I realized you had the wrong stuff up there. I just happened to click the camera because I wanted to see what the zoom was and realized it wasn't a CF camera :). There was one that had a black faceplate I believe, although I'm not sure.

buy a 512 camera card and pick up a 1gb flashdrive.

you will have plenty of space for pictures....heehehe. seriously though....the 512 will give you some room for movies too.
